British Campaign (Bill Dickens), with AK4K v.0.91, played with PG2 2.20 exe, completed in Dec'2010

OK, it's time to try this :monster again. I'm scared after my first try 6-years ago, so I will go on higher level this time. It's still doubtful if it will be passable at 150, but in case of another failure I can still adapt Doug's tactic and start it at 300%.
I'm scared when remember those hordes of enemy planes – what they can do with current AK stats. :yikes
I have somewhat ambitious plan to go only with UK equipment all the way, so no fat French tanks this time.

1. Narvik

Pretty easy initial battle, as all my units even didn't get single bar here and most experienced units became 58 exp. fighter. Anyhow, I know from my previous failed attempt of 2004, that it is an illusion for naives and difficulty level will rise high at some stage dramatically - no nice learning curve here - just black or white.

Landed all my units on the eastern shore and directed to the south. During the battle purchased a lot of units for prestige available (and went over the cap easily). Couple of them was deployed next to the western VH/SH to help in closest German VH capturing. Some started from captured German SH (on peninsula - was empty, so I took it promptly with one of destroyers) and joined main forces which went from the south.
Paratroopers took both German airfields in the meantime, but enemy air force wasn't very annoying here, thanks to many snowy turns.
Naval battle was won easily and Warspite was crucial unit which helped to take Narvik VH in the last BV turn. Got some crappy fighter proto.

2. Arras

Before the battle I sold both Ghurkas and Paratrooper, as well as MG. Upgraded Bridging to Engineer and small Lt IV to Matilda II. Sidegraded wheeled recon to Carrier. Purchased additional Scots, another Carrier and Cruiser IV tank.

The battle was simple, just all around attack to the southern enemy objectives, which thanks to many auxiliaries support were taken easily one by one. The farthest SW airfield objective was taken by paratroopers. Unfortunately newly purchased tank was killed during the battle after multiple attack.
I expected hard time due to German air supremacy, but with their “normal” stats enemy planes were not so scary – I even managed to shot down one Stuka and two 109s.
Experience is coming very slowly, so I planned to fight as long as possible, but several exposed units were seriously weakened. In that situation I didn't wait, just took last VH two turns before the BV limit. No proto this time.

3. Sidi Barrani

Before the battle I purchased additional AD, then upgraded third tank to Matilda II (will be possible to change them to Sherman V for free later) and both fighters to Martlet I.

The battle wasn't difficult but the distance to travel was quite huge and I was too slow.
I deployed Scots in SE area, and they captured (together with some auxiliaries placed there initially) all objectives in the area, that mean VH, SH and airfield. Afterward they took couple of flags in the desert, as was not enough time to join other fighting forces.
The far SW airfield objective was taken by my Paratrooper with bomber support with some time spared.
Main battle was placed around Sidi Barrani, which must be taken and its perimeter cleared, to allow farther advance. I lost my Infantry in the battle, which was overran by Italian tank. That Italian Panzer division was quite annoying at the beginning, but luckily my combo of three Matildas was able to kill them all. Unfortunately that was their only achievements due low efficiency against soft targets, as well as low speed which didn't allow to reach western area on time.
After securing Sidi Barrani I directed NW objective full speed, but reached it one turn too late. Weakly defended was taken straight in the next turn after arrival, but it was one turn to late for BV. I got two leaders for my infantry units, surely as compensation for killed one.
The air battle was won easily, as three Italian bombers were grounded before my third turn passed, and two fighters a while later. Naval battle was under RN control all the time, and all bigger Italian ships were sunk, but two weakened destroyers survived somewhere in the map corner.
So, let's go to Bardia – time to visit it finally to verify some legends. Regular V is my objective, but hard fight is expected.

4. Bardia

This battle was completely new for me, so two restarts were necessary to figure out what's going on here. First I tried to split my forces on two groups, attacking the closest Fort Capuzzo VH as well as directing northern Bardia VH at the same time, but that wasn't successful in any case.
The most annoying things occurred two Italian fighters, both 2-bars and 12 strength, which were some miraculous way transferred here from the future (note scenario date – Jan '41). One MC.205 (IN=7, AA=16, AD=15 – available since Jun '43) and one nasty Re.2005 (IN=8, AA=19, AD=15 – available since May '43) with Dev Fire leader. My best available fighters, which should rule the sky, were ridiculously inferior comparing to more than two years advanced Italian equipment.
Both initial attempts were stopped after 4th turn, as I was down by one fighter and one core Matilda (or infantry) since then each time. Obviously, this Italian air forces needed special approach. My only hope it, that will be not typical issue in this campaign, as I can not imagine fighting against Me262 or King Tigers somewhere in '43, having only up to date available British stuff.

So, before the third, final attempt I did serious preparations knowing more about the battle setup. First of all, I decided to avoid any investments in Paratroopers contingent (which was tempting due to new Recon Move leader), as I noted there was no air transport available (strange, that I have read in some AAR about Para dropping operations here). I downgraded 5,5 inch gun to smaller 4,5 inch (with more ammo, what is important in the desert), sold all three 40mm AD guns and purchased four biggest 3,7 inch ADs. Added fourth Matilda II.

First I approached closest Fort Capuzzo VH with all of my forces, forming backing row of overlapping AD guns behind them and keeping my air forces in reserve initially. That careful approach allowed to clear the sky from all five Italian planes during 4/5 turns. The only victim on my side was brave recon, :rip which was spotted and despite being at full 10 strength it was killed by that nasty Dev Fire fighter in two consecutive shots. Anyway, as I said the sky was cleared soon and Fort Capuzzo fort destroyed.

After taking the first objective, I detached smaller part of my forces (one Para on foot, one Engineer, one Matilda, one 25Pdr and two aux Indian infantry), which directed northern VH – Bardia. Another group (aux Cruiser tank, one Scots, one Matilda, one 25Pdr and recon) directed SW objective in the desert. The rest of my forces went straight to double VH in the centre. I purchased new Carrier recon as well, which joined the main group.

The SW objective was weakly defended and captured promptly, with some support of temporarily purchased Hudson bomber (as some prestige was accumulated in the meantime). Afterward that group directed to the north, going along the edge of map and hoping to help with NW airfield capturing.

The “Bardia” group advanced gradually and took an airfield first, then started to approach Bardia. That wasn't easy as AI purchased some R-2 SPATs from time to time, creating (together with support-fire forts) some troubles for my weakened units. Advance was slow, but I finally settled my Engineer next to Bardia VH just one turn before the V limit, hoping to attack successfully in the next round.

Most difficult task was done by main forces, which spend several turns on capturing central double VH. During that assault my newly purchased recon was killed :rip by R-2 SPAT which occurred next to VH/SH from nowhere. When finally twin objectives were taken, I sent couple of units to the west, so one infantry reached the airfield neighborhood two turns before the V limit. In the meantime my southern group approached as well. After resupplying my units I was ready to final attack exactly in the last turn allowing to score desired regular Victory.

So, I was said, in the very last turn I had still two VHs to take. I noted that in my bank some nice amount of prestige was accumulated, so I purchased two additional level bombers, which were used for VH defenders softening (each attack suppressed 4-5 points). After that preparation both were captured just on time and my defined aim was achieved.

The battle wasn't as difficult as I expected, after reading some AARs, when I figured out what's going on, but obviously playing at 150% made the difference, allowing me to made some serious purchased during the battle. I lost only 3 units here (two core recons and aux tank) and got six new leaders, some nice, but unfortunately crappiest possible for my bomber (can not do Gixian's sell out trick, as this is free core unit).

5. East Africa Invasion

Before the battle I sold all three temporary purchased bombers. For prestige gained upgraded Paratrooper to Engineer, and both RM infantries to Para units. Added new Carrier recon as a replacement to killed one, and purchased Beaufighter for remaining prestige (this is only for a while).

The battle was simple and rather easy - no restarts needed. As no air transport again, I must use ocean deployment cheat to pack my Paras into their Dakotas. The Scots division supported by one Matilda started from NE area, when the rest in the main (northern) deployment zone. I was able to deploy both my fighters on the carrier promptly, as no airfield at the beginning of the battle. Both bombers must wait till some of them will be captured.
I sent both Paratroopers to SE airfield VH. They landed and killed supporting arty first, then with a little help of my planes cleared VH as well, so I could deploy my remaining planes. As air transport counter was set back to 0 after landing, they were not able to do much more.
Scots landed on NE sea shore, then attacked closest objective straight to the south. As I gained air superiority immediately, there was easy to capture the city and another airfield in neighborhood.
Main forces landed in central north area, then directed to the west and took the NW city first, then western airfield and farthest SW objective at the end, three turns before the BV limit. Got nice fighter proto, so finally justice was on my side, Gix.
A lot of new equipment is in the shop now, so time for some rearmament. :sherman
And now is the further path decision time, only BV or TV are rational in this battle (but as I remember BV is hard to score, so I think I will focus on TV and experience collecting).

6. El Alamein

So, I've got planned TV here, but must say BV was fairly possible if I didn't make mistake with use of my Para units. Anyway, I'm too tired to replay whole battle, so will take that result and make time loop, invading Casablanca.

Before the battle I sold Beaufighter and less experienced AD gun. Upgraded all Matildas to Shermans for free. Upgraded 4,5 inch and one 25Pdr to Priest. Upgraded Hurricane bomber to Boston, and purchased additional one to deal with German Panzers. For the rest bought 2 AT guns.

The battle was very dynamic, as a lot of mobile enemy units here. I moved slightly first, but soon German and Italian waves attacked, so I spent some time defending my position and reducing amount of attackers.

In the meantime I sent Paratrooper far NW to the city objective placed there. It landed there after 3 turns and attacked defender promptly, which was probably mistake. Enemy unit was reduced to 4 sp, but withstood in position, when my Para left with 3 sp only. Afterward enemy was repairing continuously, but I was not able to refit my Paratrooper fully, due to adjacent enemies in the city and sand all around, so must rather retreat than continue that VH assault. After that first landing I had another air transport available, so sent Commando to far SW objective this time. It was attacked after two turns, but my unit wasn't successful again. German SPAT guarding it was strong enough to defend it, as it was sand hex, not the city. I should concentrate both my Paras on NW city which they could take attacking together, instead of using them separately so both of them failed to complete their job.

The ground units made breakthrough and cleared central area from enemies, so I counterattacked, on the south first. Both closest objectives in the north, as well as SW and middle west were taken safely inside the BV limit, but there was no way to take remaining NW city on time. I could score regular V, but waited for the first TV turn before finally captured that last VH. Lost one recon after shooting by 88mm AT and got my first leader on tank.

7. Casablanca

Nothing interesting to buy before the battle, as this battle is before the previous one, so some equipment, like Shermans, disappeared for a while. According to my rule using only UK equipment, I can not buy nothing American as well, so purchased 4 AVRE just for fun, to check how they works. Surprisingly, they proved to be very efficient against bunkers, taking out 5-6 points in single attack.

That was probably easiest scenario so far. No problems with French forces. I used both Paratroopers to take SE airfield, and then two cities with twin VHs on the east from the initial landing area. With strong air support (purchased additionally Lancasters for excessive in-battle prestige) that was very easy task.
The rest of my forces just landed on the northern shore and captured everything in the run. No proto, but two new leaders for tank and bomber.

8. Sicilian Invasion

A lot of work at HQ this time. Sold all temporary units, as Lancasters and AVREs, as well as both useless AT guns. Upgraded one Engineer to Commando and two Scots to Engineer. Upgraded all Shermans to Crocodile (they are the same price as Firefly IIC, so later free switch will be possible). Upgraded two remaining 25Pdrs to Priest. Upgraded both Martlets to Spitfire XII and both bombers to Tempest. Purchased Carrier recon.

Another pretty easy battle. Sent three Paratroopers with special mission, so they captured western airfield first, then SW airfield with VH and at the end southernmost VH (seven turns before the BV limit).
Main forces landed and started advance in two columns, 3rd Arm on the eastern flank, 4th Arm in the center. Auxiliaries which landed in NW area were split on two groups, some units joined central group, and the rest attacked on western flank, advancing quickly around the road on western bank of river.
During scenario I added two bombers for accumulated prestige, which were used to fight with strong German Panzers mainly. Anyway, no problems with them due to my massive forces, which were unstoppable. The last VHs (central one and that in the middle east) were captured in the same turn, safely inside the BV limit (two turns left). Got another leader for my fighter.

So, now is the time to visit Simeto Valley, where my previous run was ended. I hope to go farther this time, as my army at 150 is much stronger than previous at 110.

9. Simeto Valley

Before the battle I sold Boston bomber and Carrier recon. Purchased Bridging to help crossing rivers. OS'ed all planes and AD guns maximally.

This battle started nasty. After two short attempts I remembered the reason I was so annoyed that gave up the CC previously. The enemy air force is overwhelming here. I was not able to avoid losing my planes in both preliminary tries, so again change of tactic was necessary (similar case to Bardia).

So, in the third try I played carefully with planes and kept them in the rear first, avoiding exposing them on attack of 5 strong fighters. Clearing the sky took couple of turns, but was finally done and the things went better afterward.
I started with small detached forces in the west, behind the river. That group consisted all Para units (no air transport here) which worked as Mountaineers here, new Bridging to cross the river next to NW objective, and one AD to cover them against air attacks. They captured VH easily and directed further to the east, helping to take another 3 objectives in northern stripe of the map.
Main forces started in big deployment zone in SW, traveling along two valleys. That was easy rolling, as enemy forces, consisting several strong tanks, were quite static here. I noted that my Crocs are quite robust, taking several shots of Panther or Tiger without loosing a point. During the battle I purchased an additional AD, Sherman and Mosquito. As the map is pretty small and I had air superiority after initial struggling, the job wasn't difficult and I scored safe BV one turn before the limit. I've got Archer proto and the last two leaders, so my roster is filled now. Honestly speaking, I would like to change couple of them for something better, but it is shame to lose so hardly collected experience at this stage, when it will become critical soon. I think I'd rather stay with them

10. Salerno - Return To Europe

Before the battle I sold Mosquito VI, Sherman and Bridging. Upgraded Paratrooper to Commando. Purchased Crocodile, Spitfire XII and Mosquito recon plane. OSed some planes for remaining prestige.

The battle was pretty standard. Most important objective was to win air battle, which was achieved promptly and in the third turn the last enemy plane was sent to the ground. In the meantime I sent my 3 Paras to the north, where they captured northernmost VH and enemy airfield. Later 2 Para units made another flight and attacked NW city with double VH, which was taken easily. That was possible mainly due aggressive AI, which sent all units towards my army, that advanced with noise from the landing zone on the south. No enemy could withstand on defensive position, even strongest tanks were no problem due my overwhelming air superiority (added two Bostons during the battle). The last VH, in the central east, was captured one turn before the BV limit.
Time to visit Normandy, and there may be some decision to take which way to go.

11. D-Day+2

Before the battle I sold both Boston bombers and green Spitfire. Sidegraded recon to Staghound. Upgraded three Spitfire to Tempest and purchased additional two Tempest fighters.

According to Pzmaniac that was probably the first of two last 'easy' battles. He suggested rather use captured SH than the sea for deployment, so I didn't pack my forces on the boats, just took closest VH/SH with auxiliaries and started my advance from there. The battle wasn't difficult, but the time limit is tight.

I sent my 3 Paras to farthest SE objective with an airfield west of it. They approached carefully and landed in some distance, when noted a Panther on its perimeter. After some battling on a side they were attacked, but killed Pz IV tank and withstood Panther strike as well. Funny thing occurred, as that Panther had horse transport attached and when tried to go back to the city it was packed into it. I attacked immediately with bomber and Commando, smashing the horse cart. The battle in the area continued to the last round, when the VH was captured.

Main forces with many auxiliaries advanced in several columns to the south, southwest and directly to the west. The advance guided by Crocs went steady, as they are able to blow out any obstacles from their way. Despite the boccage all objectives were captured one by one, but due to long distance to cover in the last BV turn I had still 3 VHs to take, that SE where Commando fought, the SW city and the central enemy VH with airfield. Luckily I had enough units grouped and final assault on all fronts were successful (purchased Lancaster to help in it). Last turn BV. BTW, I noted that Me109K, which arrived lately, had horse transport assigned as well, but didn't flight in it. My hopeless Archer didn't shot once in this battle.

The next battle is a choice scenario, which way to go.
BV/V - shorter, but more risky path (difficult like hell battles, where at least V is needed), TV - slightly longer path with bigger margin (where all results but Loss are acceptable, but I don't expect the fighting will be easier there). Important factor (not for me, but for Gixian and Kovi surely) is hopeless cap setting at the second path, so I don't know if they want to go there.

12. Caen - Charnwood - Oden Valley

Before the battle I sold Lancaster and one AD gun. Sidegraded 3 Crocodilles to Fireflies. OS'ed all planes, all arties and DD tank maximally.

No problem with this battle, which is very similar to standard SSI scenario in stock British campaign. Both southern VH were captured by Commando very early. The rest took little more time, but the result about LT BV or BV+1 was fairly possible, anyway I didn't push too much. No sense to risk when the plan was to take TV here and go further to Market Garden.
When I had all VHs captured, excepting the eastern one (which was cleared but not taken for purpose), I made backup savegame in the last V round (to have possibility return here and try another path, if necessary) and fought farther as long as possible, to maximize flag and turn prestige incomes. All flags were taken and the last enemy unit was killed one turn before the TV limit, that ended the battle.
So, now I'm going so called “DTR” path, straight linear, where BV/V/TV are allowed. As protos are useless now (perhaps only to sell them), looks like the best option from economical point of view may be slowing down and focusing on TVs (more turn pp) and flags robbing.

13. Market Garden Phase 1

Before the battle I only OS'ed all planes, arties and tanks maximally.

That was easy battle. I sent Commando with some air support to capture farthest SE objective. The rest advanced in two columns directing east. Enemy was very passive here, so that was easy to eliminate even strong units one by one with massive air support. When central airfield was taken I finally moved American paratroopers into action (earlier they just waited in their initial positions) and they attacked enemy defensive position from the east, which was unexpected and created havoc. 15 sp Fireflies ruled, smashing 9 sp Tiger or 10 sp JagdPanther in one shot even not losing single point.
I got comfortable BV with three turns in spare and nice Centurion prototype, which may be hardly usable at this stage.

14. Market Garden Phase 2

Before the battle only OS'ed my planes, arties and tanks maximally.

What a surprise, Market Garden operation without air transport. Anyway, my Commando did very good job walking on foot here as well.
The battle was very easy due to enemy aggressive behavior. All that panzers spread on the map could create more problems, if they didn't run blindly on my position since the beginning. I formed defensive combo in the city and waited there for a while, repelling enemy attacks with strong air support. In 3rd turn I started advance gradually in all enemy VHs direction, clearing the way from German units running in opposite direction. I lost only some OS points here, and the biggest waste was reducing one of my tanks from 15 so to 9 by Overwatch Panther.
The battle at final stage, when I reached enemy VHs was very easy, as all objectives were barely defended. Only scaring moment was created when AI purchased King Tiger next to my Firefly, but the result of that duel was pretty good – King Tiger survived at 2 sp taking only 2 sp of my tanks.
So, going slowly in comfortable pace I still got nice and easy BV one turn before the limit. I suppose it was the last one, as all remaining battles are scaring.

15. Metz

Before the battle I only max. OS'ed all units excepting infantry. About 500 left in bank in case of emergency situation.

After reading many scaring tales about this battle I planned very slow and careful advance for TV here (that's main positive of this path that you don't need nothing more to win). First took closest VH on the south of deployment area, then split my forces on two group. About the same strength. One directed northern VH on the river, and the other went in SE direction.

In the meantime all three Commando units flew (one by one) and landed (2 in the forest, 1 in between rivers) close to the southernmost VH on the western river bank. The took that VH (with some help of American auxies), then crossed the rivers and captured another VH on the eastern bank. Later they walk farther to the east and too third VH in the last moment of battle.

Main forces approached the central objective on the river and spent several turns fighting there, when the second group captured northern city rather easy. They directed to eastern VH with an airfield afterward. After some fighting both, central and eastern VHs were under control at the same time. Remaining objectives didn't cause any problems, as in the meantime all German heavy stuff was removed from the map. Got safe TV with two turns in spare, capturing all flags but one and killing all units excepting some hidden infantries and bunkers. Looking back it wasn't so nasty as I expected.

I didn't say much about nasty stuff which is placed here. Couple of Tigers, King Tigers and Panthers needed proper attention, but they are spread all around the map, so keeping your units together was important factor when fighting with strong but separated enemy Panzers. Despite careful approach I lost plenty of OS, several units ended at 1-2 sp and I must repair some of them to keep decent pace of advance. Anyway, only four auxiliaries were lost.

16. Ardennes-The Bulge

I played short 2-3 turns to see what's going on here, before decided about purchases and tactic. Soon was obvious that cautious defending against German hordes.
So, after that recon I purchased 2x 17Pdr and 4x 25Pdr which should be needed to reinforce my defensive lines setup. In addition OS'ed best (leader) tanks and planes for the rest (not enough pp for anything more).

The battle was difficult like hell for me, due to the permanent snow which negated my air superiority completely. In that situation I struggled to take humble TV here. I didn't manage to take TV in my first try, when only two first turns were air friendly, then snowed to the end of battle. In the last TV turn I still have 4 objectives to take.
I decided to try again, starting from a savegame I made about half way, trying to push harder this time. The crucial thing which allowed me to succeed this time was single turn of overcast weather, which made possible bombing of northernmost VH. That helped my three Commando to take that objective guarded by StuH (which was not possible previously without air strike). In the last TV turn I had still three VHs to capture (the northeastern – approached by Commando, the central one placed on the south of airfield and another one on the SW of it – attacked by main forces coming from the south). In that last turn my desperate attacks was successful and I managed to take the last turn TV which made me...

17. Operation Plunder

This is offensive type scenario, so I sold all 25Pdrs and purchased two Sextons. OS'ed couple of units for the rest.

The battle was slightly easier than previous one, thanks to smaller army (mainly core) and defensive enemy setup, so the fighting was spread all around the map against small groups of Germans. Big amount of air transport was available, so I used whole group of Commando at once. They landed and captured NE airfield, then fought on its perimeter against JagdPanther and Tiger. When that battle was finished two RM units were loaded into airplanes and landed promptly next to NE objective, which was captured in the next turn.
The main group was deployed only in SW zone. All units went to the west and then American auxiliaries and couple of my core turned to the north to capture VH in the middle of map. The rest attacked big city behind the river on the south. The river was crossed there, and in addition via the bridge in the center. When I was on the other side I split my forces on several smaller groups focusing VH placed there. Some real fight was needed to deal with running Panthers, but most of enemies were killed and finally I could attack the last enemy VH, which was an airfield guarded by JagdPanther. It was taken in the last TV turn.
So, almost done. The last battle can be even lost, but I hope for another TV at least.

18. The Ruhr

Before the battle I sold towed ATs and both Sextons. Purchased Bridging (Kanev map) and OS'ed some units for the rest.
During the battle I purchased a lot of unnamed green units for captured flags prestige.

This battle was much easier than previous three :monster 's. The weather was mainly good, so I could fight for air superiority since the beginning, which aim was achieved despite German strong air force deployed here. That helped to deal with tanks later.
I avoided northern river crossing, directing to the east at the beginning. After smashing closest defenses I detached one group which went far to the south going along the eastern edge of map, when the rest crossed the river via first eastern ford, just below the NE objective captured earlier.
Just at the beginning I sent all my Commando to the south, and they took two objectives there, Later I purchased bunch of Paras gradually when some pp were collected (the only way to introduce new units to fight there on time) and landed them all around the map.
As was said, there were uncountable amount of heavy tanks and SPATs located all around the map, but this is “Kanev”, with many cities and flags, so I tried to use this opportunity and big part of fighting with enemy cats could be done in those cities luckily. Unfortunately I lost my Centurion :rip when fought in SE area, as well as temporary purchased recon. At the end I was able to take safe regular Victory with one turn in spare. Save my army composition just before capturing the last VH.

I'm glad this :monster is finally over, completed in this second attempt, over 6 years after my first unsuccessful try. At the beginning I thought that probably could go at 110 just like previously (hence all things went easy) but after passing these final stage I'm happy with my “chicken” choice of 150.
