CAMPAIGN CHALLENGE LXIII
2nd Sino-Japanese War 1937-45
By Golothin (Bjorn)
Efile is the LXF
Intro:
Forgotten, overshadowed and merged with the Second World War, the Second Sino-Japanese War was nevertheless the largest Asian war in the 20th century. It was a long, bloody and cruel war, with millions of dead soldiers and civilians. The war was the result of a decades-long Japanese imperial policy aiming to dominate China politically and militarily and to secure its vast raw material reserves. Initially the Japanese scored major victories in Shanghai, Nanking and Wuhan against poorly trained and equipped mass armies. But the Japanese had underestimated the resistance and by 1939 the war had reached stalemate after Chinese victories in Changsha and Guangxi. The Japanese were also unable to defeat the Chinese communist forces in Shaanxi, which performed harassment and sabotage operations against the Japanese. In 1942, China continued to receive more and more modern supplies from the United States as the Chinese conflict was merged into the Asian theatre of World War II. The Chinese army progressing well in training and equipment and became a dreaded opponent for the Japanese. In 1944, with the Japanese position in the Pacific deteriorating rapidly, the IJA mobilized over 400.000 men and launched Operation Ichi-Go, their largest offensive of World War II, to attack the American airbases in China and link up the railway between Manchuria and Vietnam. But it was their last success! In Spring 1945 the Chinese launched offensives that retook Hunan and Guangxi and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Soviet invasion of Manchuria forces the Japanese to surrender. An eight-year long war was over.
This is a historical campaign and leads you to the main battles of the 2nd Sino-Japanese War (except one last unhistorical scenario). You main opponent, the Chinese Army, is numerically strong, but initially poorly trained and equipped. The right answer are tanks and the extensive use of the overrun ability. Later, they develop into a well-equipped and worthy opponent with modern tanks and aircraft. So building a strong air force is advisable and will need in later scenarios. And you have to be a little more careful with you core units, the default unit strength (=8) is lower than usual.
