Change base to a distant airfield

Hi Generals,

I'd like to change the base for my airplanes but the other airfield is out of reach (out of full movement range) therefore the change base feature doesn't work.
Shall I build a dirt airfield halfway to the other airfield? Is this the only solution?

BTW big thanks for the fantastic game! I've playing different versions of it since PG I.

This is either an E-File issue, or the creator intended this to happen, in which case you indeed are supposed to create a relay airfield.

In WW2, American planes transferred to Europe had to make a pit stop at Ascension Island, a tiny spec of land in the middle of the ocean, giving birth to the saying among pilots: "If you don't find Ascension, your wife will get a pension"...
