Added the following links:

russian maps 1917 - 1941 (russian language only)
This site is in russian language aonly but it is possible to navigate by year and date. Maybe people who speak russian can find some other useful informations on that site? I don't know.

World War Weapons, Diary, Armies, History, Pictures
This site gives an general overview about various topics related to both world wars. But more on WWII though.

Norway 1940
This is a web archive mirror of one of the best (if not the best) site about the norwegian army in 1940. The original site is down now, but the web archive mirror works as well, as far as i have tested.

France 1940
This site offers the complete OOB for the French Army in 1940. It even shows the OOB of the overseas units, like the units in Indochina. There are other useful informations about the French Army as well.
But unfortunately most of the other links for other nations are broken. I still consider this a useful site because of the informations about the french army.

Austria-Hungary's Last War, 1914-1918 (book)
A book about Austria-Hungary in WWI. Urica posted this link in the Alpenkorps thread at JP's and i think it can be useful. It also offer some great maps.

Kaisercross
Offer information about: "World War 1 and the Colonial Wars in the period leading up to World War 2" Posted by Jurgen in the same Alpenkorp thread at JP's.

EDIT: WW2 Areal photos and maps, this site is down at the moment, but the ftp server is still up and i am downloading in this moment.

Dunno if someone cares :lol , but i just checked some sites and found out that: WW2 Areal photos and maps (FTP Server) website is down. But the blog is still up and i changed the link in the first table accordingly. Although it seems you have to contact j c calvin for login data now if you are a new user. The FTP server is still working, i downloaded Poland '39 situation maps few days ago.

While i was looking for the Latin Generals website i checked old links and some of the PG2 sites shared some useful links too. Some links are dead after all the years, some are already part of our link collection and 4 links added to the second table today:

- The official history of New Zealand in WW2
- French tanks and armored cars 1915 - 2008
- Armed Conflict Events Data (WW2 day by day chronology)
- British Artillery in WW2

Added to the second table:

Danisch military vehicles 1909 - today - the website looks simple but provides excellent infomation about all? vehicles in Danish military service.
Danish Army on April 9th, 1940 - A PDF about the danish army and fighting on the day of the german invasion.
Swiss military vehicles, guns - A good site about vehicles in Swiss Army service as well as artillery and AD guns.

(Maybe i should put the second table into alphabetical order since the table becomes larger, but the table looks so complicated itself (see it when klick on quote the first post) that i am not sure if i want to do it :lol )

A very interesting site
Is it legal?
I would be more wondering what you will download -> you don't know who it belongs to (only electronic form and no name)

You download legally (I haven't tried)
But do they - operate legally? :fused

You talked about linking to your backgrounds -> maybe this thread is better to post here

Yes, that is the question. For some old documents the copyright is expired but more modern ones... The website says:

I mean, there are many sites where you can download old books but this site :dunno Better dismiss it.

I want to post little pictures (400x400) and when you click on them, you get to the big picture. This thread is not the right place i think.
I guess i will post it in my own map thread. Although i think nobody reads that once it gets buried in the forum :lol

Small airfield - just the 18th Escadrille army light aviation, flying Alouette II. They switched to the anti-tank version of the Agusta 109 later.

I guess i am the only one who frequently uses the link-lists and so i added some more of my links (so i can clean my browser's bookmarks :lol )
I also reorganized the lists and shiftet the second one to the second post because the opening post was getting longer and longer and i don't know the maximum legth of a post.

I added following links to the second table:

All Nations - Landships, tanks, SPG, armoured cars and tractors of WWI
Australia - Australia, New Zealand & Papua Military Aircraft
New Zealand - Australia, New Zealand & Papua Military Aircraft
Germany - Deutsches Afrikakorps (through web archive; german language)
Russia - Russian Military History (link once sent to me by Para :yes )
United Kingdom - Crossley Military Vehicles 1919-1945
Netherlands - Royal Netherlands Navy Warships of WWII

[EDIT: typo]

To create maps for Open General, you can of course use various maps, be it historical or publicly available such as google maps. But I would like to show you two pages that are not listed in the resource links: viewtopic.php?p=110#p110.

The first page is topoView - https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/ - a page with maps of the USA and where you can also find historical maps of these areas.
The other site is the Russian Retromap - http://retromap.ru - to which I want to devote more attention.

In this post I provide general information about what you can find and what the tools are. In the next post, I will present various examples of the available maps broken down into details and the extent of the map coverage.

General view with a short description:

I - current map
II - labels of the current map
III - other maps to choose from, interactive bar based on location
IV - zoom in, zoom out, current zoom level
V - work with different modes

You can enlarge the screen by clicking on it, then it will open in a new tab.

Here you can see a tab for working with different modes:

Inversion mode:

Black and white mode:

Light mode 1:

Light mode 2:

Turning off transparency (0% level) will give us a view to the second map here Open Streen Standart Map:

Of course, the second map can also to be set on your own chosen map:

Both maps can be set with different modes and transparency:

For example, black and white 25% transparency and the other set to inversion:

List of the most interesting maps in my opinion from different time periods and different countries. Among them, British, American, German and French (Revolution's time) maps and are mainly Russian and Soviet. I also added information about the map scale and I also show the extent of the map map. An interesting accent are also maps with marked military operations (Soviet offensive on Rostov 1942).

You can enlarge the screen by clicking on it, and it will open in a new tile.

I know about retromap but for some reason never added it to the list :huh

May i ask you to remove all the pictures and/or transfer them to a seperate thread if you want to keep them?
The file size of all files is very big and it took me several minutes to load the thread.
When posting pictures it is best to post jpg and reduce file size as much as possible imo.
While i type this all pictures have to be loaded again and everything is slow. But maybe that is just my connection :bonk

[EDIT: the thread is very slow for me and i can not work on it at the moment. I will try again tonight to add the links]

Added two links, metioned by Parabellum, to the second table:
- Axis History Forum, probably the most extensive WW2 forum on the internet.
- And a site about German History 1919 - 1945 with detailed information about units, equipment and lots of other information (german language only)

:howdy Hello Alberich, i would like to kindly ask you again if it is possible to remove all the map pictures from this thread? If you want to keep the pictures you may open a new thread or use one of the map threads.

Opening this thread and loading all the maps may take some time for visitors and some of the file sizes are quite big. Overall its 70+mb or something like this. Imo this thread should be about the link tables only and it would be easier and faster to operate.

I will step down from the maintenance of this thread. Most of the time i am using a portable webstick (with limited data) on my laptop and pc, and i don't want to load all the pictures in this thread every time i visit it. And i frequently visit it and use the links! So i will copy everything i need to my efile thread.
Sorry, but asked 2 times, in September and July, if it is possible to put the pictures into an other thread but got no reaction.
I don't know if it is technically possible for someone else to take over this thread...

[EDIT: Added a link to a forum post about Turkey with very good information.
Unfortunately the Texas University map collection is archived and not updated anymore. Some maps are not available anymore already. It was the best map collection on the internet by far imo.]
