(*) usually i would go for inf with more Close Defense, but the player is on the defense in many scenarios and CD is actually 1) a hybrid offensive-defensive stat and 2) for combat with or against inf, whereas the campaign is more focussed on tank combat. This makes the infantry's Ground Defense and mobility more important (i spied the Efile and saw that cav offers a good upgrade path in this regard).

I confess i restarted once in turn 1 for different deployment.
It turned out that this wasn't necessary, because the northern AI units actually never move (okay, the tank moved - rest of units remained static).

As i often like to gamble, i sent the BT tank (which lacked rcn/spotting support) over the northern prairie to the northeastern flags, once it seemed that aty + damaged inf could clear the north on their own.

Lots of Snow with a bit of Overcast in between - i already was considering a Lvl Bomber (they have All Weather ability), but just when i had enough money for one of the interesting variants, the weather turned Overcast and i went for numbers instead, to ease up the battle in the north - they could attack for 2 turns, then it was snow again until scenario end.

Could have been BV in turn 10 or 11, but i played till last turn for the Prestige (and XP: southwest of Juntusranta (21,7) are 2 inf hiding in the forest, which basically don't move).

I confess that in the middle of the buying spree i closed HQ, checked auxes and made a provisional deployment phase to see how all planned battle groups would look like. I also :whine for help, because i was confused about ADs and Flaks.


Deployed
- a fullstrength aux group in the western forest (north of the river)
--> also an aux cav a bit north of the forest, to which it retreated
- 2x aux T-26 and an inf in the northern forest (the AI sometimes needs hints where to go, especially if you want to delay or avoid fights. I wanted to avoid or at least delay potential northern enemies from going to Minsk, these 3 units formed a line from the forest to the river in an attempt to draw the AI towards the northeastern VH)
- a big (2 hexes were unused) mixed core-aux group around the northeastern VH (29,11)
- a big (1 hex was unused) mixed core-aux group north of Minsk (fast and respectively (half)tracked units on the plains and airfield, most retreating towards Minsk, the 2x BTs and 1x T-34 waiting as strategical reserve between Minsk and the northeastern VH)
- 2 aux cavalries (they have a bigger spotting range) east of Minsk
- rest of units in Minsk (leaving 4 hexes empty)

the western and northeastern groups had some aty+AD support, but the bulk of Flak/aty/AD units was sitting in Minsk


The idea came from the lay of the land as well as Deploy and Victory Hexes, leading to expectations from where enemies would attack. Some of my expectations were wrong, some were risky, but overall it worked.

With the memory of CC76 still somewhat fresh, the first order of the play was deciding wether to blow Bridge(s) in the northeast, to control the AI's path, or not. I decided against blowing (not my brightest moment, but i hadn't seen the Swamp hex at first), to not scare the AI away from the VH.

The second order of the play was blowing the friendly airfield (the only airfield on the whole map), to deny supply to the Luftwaffe. In retrospective, this was unnecessary, because ADs + Flaks were effective at shredding the enemy air units.

I wasn't sure how effective own airforce would be (0 XP-bars), so i parked them east of Minsk at first. In the end, the only shots they fired at enemy air was the He 111 (badly damaged Lvl Bomber that parked outside of AD Range), Hs 123 (badly damaged and sitting in a place where i could park the core ftr outside of enemy spotting) and Bf 110 (unwilling to enter AD areas after turn 1).


The western group delayed the enemies in their area for 5 turns :salute
(technically, for all 7 turns, because a) the last aux unit was killed in Player turn 7 and b) i started small counter-attacks against enemies that made it past the forest, thus saving the back of survivors)

The northern mini group wasn't really needed (all enemies either tried crossing the Swamp or the bridges), but they still helped in defending the northeastern VH.

Blowing the airfield was pointless, since ADs and Flaks (and a few ftr shots) blew the enemy airforce to smithereens until turn 4.

Minsk wasn't really in danger - buying so many units (instead of some of the nicer HiFi stuff) was the better choice :)

In turn 5 i send a T-28 and cav from the airfield as well as the airforce to the northeast - another group of enemies started emerging from the eastern woods, attacking from both sides along the river, and put the VH defenders into trouble.

In turn 6 some enemies from the eastern forest also started arriving near Minsk (a rcn car actually arrived in turn 5 already), but this was easily managable.

I confess that i again worked with a provisional deployment phase, where i deployed units around the map to see how the battlegroups would look - and then decided what i should still buy.

I have just read the other 4 available AARs (3 here on OG, 1 on Rayydars) and i go conform with Para and Csaba: offense is the best defense.
Playing @50% (and picking cheaper units for ugrade and purchase) i had +10 units compared to Csaba, thus i could put together the 3 desired battlegroups.

With the enemy airfield nearby (and 14+3 DHs, while there are 14 in the northeast and southwest each) i expected the toughest battle to occur here. I was right in both, ground and air (though i was lucky that the AI sent its Romanian airforce from the south also here - i only expected to meet the Luftwaffe).

I expected the "middle" fight here. Stressy1 was when in turn 1 (and this was the first time ever that i saw it in action) the German Spy sabotaged this group's cavalry :eek :scared which barely survived the first turn - and at the same time the German "BT captured" tank rushed southwards past my defense line (+1 or 2 unit(s) and i could have prevented this breakthrough).
(btw, do i want to know how an organic unit gets sabotaged ? maybe the germans used secret technology from thule :stress )

The briefing said "expect parts of the X-th Romanian army, inexperienced", so i naturally expected the easiest fight here, and planted the weaker units accordingly.


It is a "Hold VH" scenario, so i didn't worry that a (single) German unit made it past my lines: there are enough turns to hunt it down and re-take lost VHs.

Temporarily lost the central VH (airfield) in turn 3 - the intruder was killed in turn 4 and the airfield liberated in turn 5.

First order of the play was praying to the goddess that this would be a reverse of the Blitzkrieg/Axis at War/other version of this scenario (meaning: German starting positions are in the west, northeast and southeast) and that the enemy wouldn't have construction/bridging units - 50% of my prayers were answered :phew

Second order of the play was picking where to fight.

I decided to blow the 4 bridges in the southwest and west (3x aux units and 1x Politsiya), and leave the northwestern bridge intact, to confront the battle here with a strong battlegroup (i thought the southwestern airfield would be too difficult to defend, if fighting in the south).
-> 2x Politsiya started west of Kiev and helped with blowing the bridge (8,13) (that's 1 of the 4 mentioned above) as well as a Forest road (7,15). It was then planned that they lay mines, to block the road south to the airfield.

1x Politsiya started in Kiev, moved south and blew the bridge (19,21) as well as layed some mines to block the southern route to Kiev.

Another strong battlegroup was delpoyed east of Kiev and, since i found the airfield difficult to defend here too, entrenched around the VH (24,10).

I planted some units in the southwest and in Kiev, in case enemies would make it past my lines and minefields.

Air war.
It was planned that the Airforce remains passive, until the Luftwaffe suffered from my ADs and Flaks. However, the AI mostly focused on the "saboteurs" (including the 2x core Politsiya) in the first couple turns, partially remaining within range of the northwestern battlegroup's SPAD, making ftr raids possible. In turn 3 the AI went amok (sending 2x Ju 87 without ftr cover to the southwestern airfield - however retreating its lvl bombers and last ftr, probably for resupply). In turn 4, finally, the AI send its remaining bombers into the Kiev and northeastern AD-webs, and ftrs could shoot down the last Messerschmidt.

A couple of hints for my deployment:
- briefing said "expect weak tanks in the east", so i put the (weak) T-28 and fresh T-34/57 tanks there
- 4x AD meant a very good air cover for both battlegroups, leaving Flaks (core and aux) to cover Kiev (Tachankas were added to battlegroups, though)
- lots of auxes makes it easy to place core at the front (for XP), while auxes cover the hinterland (Kiev, roads to the southwestern airfield)

:eek treachery - with their Speed=2, they were totally balanced ;D

I just checked and when selling 1-2 attachments, i could easily finance more expensive infantry, so i agree this change is ok.

That won't be tooooo expensive ;) The next unit who can lay and clear mines are the recruits or whatever they are called in the different nations, they cost just around 24pp more than the police.
Obviously it was my mistake to allow police to handle mines :bonk
But i already said that there are probably 1000 mistakes and i will need 2 to 3 years to cope with that :cool
