Current scenario: Rzhew Meat Grinder
This was a hard one for me. I tried it first time before dinner. I stopped this try because a T-34 tank was tank. After dinner I started a next try. Than I had to reload two times and missed the BV for one turn. Tonight I tried it a third time and this tactic was great. I could win BV -2 and not needed a reload.
At HQ I had not enough money for a new artillery, so I gave my two Level Bombers support attachments. This should help me in the three scenarios after Rzhew, because this are winter scenarios.
There are four VHs (one VH is not on the picture, it is in the very south). The player can deploy his units on several places, but my decision is always north, northeast near the only airfield and in the southwest. There are two really critical things in this scenario. The Luftwaffe is really strong and the player starts without airfield (I now give the player a airfield as unit and he can deploy it where he wants). Also it is dangerous to deploy all his air units in the north or in the south because between on the flanks are ewerythere units and also some flak and ADs which can interfere players planes if they cross the map.
The other difficulty is in the south. Here three range 2 units, some other tanks, a 150mm artillery, a 8.8 flak as artillery and some other units are waiting for the player. This was always the waek point in my previous tries. There I had only weaker units deployed.
In my last try I played a different tactic. I used all T-34 (except the flame T.34), the KV 2, Yak AT and flak, both range 2 guns, a recon, all three big artilleries and the small flak in the southwest. Also I deployed there the airfield. This was not a so smart idea, but the good thing is that my bombers helped to clear this are very well. In the north I deployed most of the other units. A small BG with some aux infantry, tachanka, a small AD, and my normal infantry were deployed in the northeast.
In the south the battle went very well. I attacked over the river and with the help of my artillery and bombers I could overun all units at the first defensive line in one turn. This can be important, because so the AI did not see me and I could kill the 150mm next turn without problems. Later StuG IIIF and IVG with Overwatch attacked, but I had built a defensive line with my support units and could destroy both units without big problems. Later I attacked the southern VH. Here I lost some SP, because there are some small artilleries. Maybe it would have been better to wait another turn. After capturing the VH I refitted two T-34 (obviously this was not necessary) and moved northward. A little BG stayed at the VH, because east of the VH were still some germans, but only one unit attacked and was overruned by my KV-2.
In the north the situation was more critical. It was no good idea to deploy all my best fighters in the south. Luftwaffe bombed very hard. The little BG east of the airfield suffered heavy losses. My tachanka did a great job, but it had no chance to block all german bombers effectively. Sibirskyan Pekhota and my bridging unit suffered heavy losses and I had to hide them for the rest of the scenario in the northeast. In Zhew is also a 170mm artillery which can shoot into players deployment hexes. Luckily it shot only at aux artillery. This was totally ok for me
In the north I had the IVD, KV-1, flame tank and two aux KVs. It is really hard to attack Rzhew directly. I moved all tanks into the east and captured at first the airfield. Then I moved more into the west and broke through the german lines at this side. Luftwaffe still annoyed me. I deployed the three aux fighters which I still have kept at HQ. They protected my core units which had left the range of my big ADs. Luftwaffe fighters destroyed a fighter, but soonly all german planes were without ammu. Meanwhile my southern groop has captured the central VH (there is no resistance on the central road through the map). They attacked the southern Rzhew VH from south, while my northern troops attacked it from north. Meanwhile my fighters shut down all german planes. This was very easy, because even the fighters had lost their ammu.
I hope this tactic can help people who have problems with this scenario
What I would change in the next try?
- deploy the airfield in the north (but the player should hide his units in southwest in the first time, otherwise Luftwaffe will attack there)
- no refitting for units in the south if they have captured the VH in the south (there job then is mostly done)
- deploy my important units more in the east of the northern deployments, because attacking in the east is better, also deploying crappy aux artillery in the west is a good idea, so the 170 mm will shoot on it, but player still needs a good tank on the western flank because there a IVG will attack in turn 2 or 3
