With the memory of the GUS campaign W92 (aka CC76) still rolling through my head, i scrolled through the DL section of the Polish generals and came across Gustlik's "G36 Greater America" campaign. It includes a navy/marines part, a rather rare topic along OG campaigns, so i hope it will be fun and interesting

@ "Hold Victory Hexes" condition
I created a bit of confusion in AAR postings during my 2 plays of CC76, with regards to "how many VHs did i actually hold".
To avoid confusion, i will write it as "[held total] of [required (for a BV)] VHs".
Examples:
"held 3 of 3 VHs" = i held all of the required VHs and achieved BV.
"held 7 of 4 VHs" = i held not only the 4 VHs required for BV, but also 3 additional ones.
If i held less than the number of VHs required for BV, i will add the actual victory type - i.e. "TV, held 1 of 4 VHs".

All names are made up of my head - any resemblance to historical or existing units is a coincidence.

Restarted once: on first attempt i lost the tank in turn 1

After that i was a bit more careful.

Cavalry travelled down the eastern road through mountains and hills towards the southeastern SH.
Rest of units went southwest, then turned east towards the VHs. In turn 3 i had to consider a traffic jam on the southwestern road, so that i send an inf and the tank southward from the Flag (18,11) - the inf then ran into the arms of a Camouflage Leader

Core suffered quite a bit of damage, so when finishing the scenario i was worried about repair costs (i somehow was still under the impression of CC76 with [no auto-refit] ), but in this campaign units are refitted for free after scenarios

Rcn car got the Leader Trigger without reload

The bought aty got the XP Trigger with a reload

@ sold MG
High Soft Attack, Range=2, Can Air Attack - it's all good. However, in my style of play, Soft Attack (with bigger ranges) is the sphere of artillery and bombers, and otherwise the MG doesn't seem to excel in any role.
I will probably bite my arse later, but i decided to sell the MG.

I was swimming in prestige: Ethiopia scenario outro said "HQ sends you some ships", instead it send me lots of booty. A cruiser-destroyer combo was probably order of the day, but after checking the beauties i said "i'll knock myself out with a mean lady of the seas" and bought a Battleship

I deployed in phases, because i don't like to place something "in the rear" of an SH if i can just move a unit(s) away and deploy more units "at the front".
So, first phase was Battleship and eng (at sea) and the rcn car on the continent.

Interestingly, i managed to capture the Port (10,10) in turn 1: 2x aty + 1x bomber brought the SH defender down to overrun range, so that i (and i wasn't even aware

of this option at scenario start) could deploy from the newly taken SH

At this point, tank, rcn car and 2x aty had been deployed from the starting SH, while cav and 2x inf (and the not yet bought units) were still available.

In (AI) turn 3, the Regia Marina appeared.
In the east an adventurous gunboat

the BB, others attacked my units on the continent.
Also, in (my) turn 3, the TBD destroyed a unit on the northern airfield, so that in turn 4 (and facing the naval threat) i was able and used the option to do an in-scenario upgrade, by sidegrading the TBD (b) to TBD (t) (move the plane on the airfield's Flag, it serves as an SH for aircraft).

In turn 7 i thought for a moment if i should continue playing a little longer (2x fort, both reachable by the BB and one of them by the eng, which were send to the eastern island) for a bit more XP, but decided to move on.

@ CL purchase
The lack of a starting airfield made a Carrier CV purchase appealing, but i thought it wiser to add more firepower against enemy navy first.

Restarted once, so that the BB could get the Leader Trigger

Deployed:
- 2x eng (so that they could reach the SH (7,17) in turn 1)
- inexperienced tank and 1x aty (sailing straight south to land a bit west of the Port (18,20))
- 2nd tank (sailing to the northwestern Port - enemy reinforces/purchases meant it had to land a bit south of the SH)
- all ships and the rcn aircraft

First goals were silencing the western SHs and getting to the western airfield.
With the first Port (7,17) captured, and the enemy airfield empty -> captured by rcns, i could deploy all the rest of the core in turn 2.

After the first enemy DD was destroyed the sea seemed pacified, so that i converted the 2 Torpedo Bombers back to ground attack role. In turn 4 the RM appeared, and i bited my own arse

Deployed at sea: all experienced - tank, 2x aty, cav rcn, 1x eng and inf. Also the ships and most aircraft.
Most ground units later joined taking the northeastern map. Navy, airforce and 1x inf went west. Carrier and airforce (except 1x rcn aircraft) quickly turned east again.

Deployed at SH (in 3 waves): leadered inf + 2x eng, 2x aty, rcn car + tank
They landed around the Port (41,22) (no actual "target" Hex) and rolled up the eastern part from the southeast.

The Cruiser hadn't gotten much XP yet, so that when the RM appeared i let it kamikaze into the heavy Cruiser.

I divided ground units into 2 more or less equal groups. In the north i deployed all at sea, in the south only deployed 1 unit (leadered eng to get the Port (25,20)) - with navy and all airforce i expected to force my way into the Port.

In the north: leadered eng, 1x tank, 1x inf, cav, 2x aty - navy was BB, 1x DD, 1x rcn aircraft
They attacked the Port (23,8) and took the eastern part of the map.

In the south: 2nd tank, rcn car, 2x aty, 2x eng (as said from the captured Port) and 1x leadered inf - navy was CL, 1x DD, CV and remaining aircraft
They attacked the Port (25,20) and took the southern and western parts of the map.

Bought units needed to be deployed in the south, since the BB managed to blow the northern SH in turn 2

I don't have Hex Grid active all the time, but i often use it. It helps when sending units around.
The tricky part is, i often play with "normal" map, but i also play a lot with "tiled" map - i

the clean overview over Terrain with tiled maps. However, on both map styles it sometimes happens that the Hex Grid is difficult to see on some terrains (sidenote: i am colour-blind):

When it comes to campaign curiosity, for 2-3 years now i feeling a strong (and growing) sympathy for navy+marines campaigns. Or maybe "special forces" campaigns in general, but "navy+marines" has the potential to offer a wide range of equipment

I'm not quite sure if a second Cruiser was smart. It has less Naval Attack than a Battleship (which costs only 400 Prestige more), and i could have bought 2 Destroyers, which i will probably need anyway, in its place

Deployed on land: rcn car, tank "Street Fighter", 2x experienced aty, 2x experienced inf, experienced eng, P-39, Spitfire and 1x F4F.
Rest of units at sea.

Confusingly, i didn't do any calculations how long the land units would need to arrive at Reykjavik - although in the end, my plan more or less worked as intended.
In turn 4 i started to worry, if they would make it in a meaningful time.
In turn 7 Reykjavik was lost.
In turn 13 planning changed to sending the slowest units (3x inf, 1x aty) to Reykjavik, and the fastest units (rcn car, tank and 1x aty) farther to the south.

Maybe i was a bit too adventurous, maybe the AI moves in mysterious ways, but the bay of Reykjavik saw the fleets of both sides getting into melee combat.

Biggest help in this scenario were the 3 rcn aircraft, which were first monitoring enemy fleet movements (U-Boats) and later helped monitoring enemy land movements. They also flew many raid missions.

Even though i prefer warmer climate, i had lots of fun at Iceland - the best scenario so far. Great map too

My first thought was:

Pearl Harbour

In the northwest i left the Paramarines, in the southwest the tank "Resilience", in the south the aux MG, in the north the aux inf regular - to protect VHs against enemy airborne inf (no idea here, but i saw enemy paradrops (and respectively units in Air Transport) in 2 or 3 previous scenarios).

Battlegroups:

* North: 1x eng, 1x aux eng, 1x aux MG, 1x aux aty - going around the northern cape.

* North/center: new tank, 2x leadered inf units, all aty (except the 2-bar gun), Flak and aux AD.

* South: cav (going through the mountains) and rcn car, 1x aty, 1x eng, 1x inf and tank "Street Fighter" - going around the southern cape.

* Airforce, including aux units, were busy everywhere.

* Navy, including aux units, were rushing to get to the main combat area.

* i moved aux ADs around, other aux units were left where they started.

Combined with other units, that blasted Kongo BB blew an experienced core inf to smithereens in turn 3

In turn 5, when it looked more or less secure to weaken VH defenses, i moved the paratroopers to the airfield (they were sitting in the mountains) - in turn 6 i packed them into ATP and send them on their way to the enemy SH.
It also looked that enemy navy was defeated, so that i started converting torpedo to attack bombers. However, there was a small break and when i returned to playing i forgot not only the already converted, but also the other 2 (t) bombers in the CV - it didn't have any notwworthy effect on the outcome (i was trying to get more XP on ground and sea units in the last turns), but anyway a

It is a [Hold VHs] scenario, but i won in turn 10 by killing all units.

I noticed it in other scenarios already, but since the AI has so many aircraft here: the airwar was pretty intense. Not even bombers with fighter-escorts were safe

Deployed a tank, rcn cav and 2x mountain aty in the northeast - rest of ground units at the SH (with infantry in a second wave).

Aux airforce + navy joined the core.
I moved some aux units around, because they were standing in the core's traveling route, later i pulled a handful of units along for temporary support, but mostly aux army was left where they started.

Abn inf jumped on planes in turns 3 and 4 and flew to the southeast, where they still saw action (ground units could do the job without paras).

Inexperienced abn inf got the XP Trigger.

I drop the info "Bonus prestige by Liberator" from AARs: usually either the BB is too slow or there are no Port hexes to capture - this is supported by the fact that out of 8 scenarios (the Liberator raised in the 3rd scenario) in only 2 i actually managed to make use of the Leader.

Fearing the loss of units, i deployed only a handful: 2x leadered paras in the west - tank (Resilience), another inf and the Flak in the east.

Overall, the scenario is relatively (*) straight forward.
The tricky part is reading the Turn Summary (it happens a lot that i only read it around turn 3-6

for the first time) and see the MSU condition.

(*) I restarted once: i was a bit too adventurous on first attempt, losing an aux CV and 3 DDs (2 core) in turn 2. Enemy is moving faster than i expected, and i myself moved quickly westwards.
After restart, i deployed ships a bit differently to increase potential XP gain for BBs - which almost backfired, when an enemy SUB evaded.

Abn inf Det.Defense started in Air Transport, land based aircraft (4x ftr, 1x bomber) needed to wait until an airfield was captured (note to self: i should consider buying a Construction inf), otherwise everything could be deployed.

Decisions, decisions, decisions... It is about time to modernize the airfleet (in fact i had already done a setup with ftr upgrades - until i looked at the AAR and saw that more stuff becomes available next scenario, which plays in April '43, thus probably even more stuff becomes available soon), or maybe start investing in Overstrength, but after spending an hour rolling back and forth i decided that i had troubles deciding.
In short, i only fixed the critical stuff (outdated torpedo bombers, lacking construction inf), added a carrier-based ftr and then invested in attachments.

I send the abn Fire.Disc by ATP to the northwestern airfield, accompanied by a ftr, bomber and rcn.
The abn Det.Defense waited at the starting airfield, until the ATP was free, then followed to the northwest.

Navy was split in 2, to operate on both sides of the peninsula.

Army was deployed at the continental SH.
Eastern group: tank Resil., 1x eng, 1x marines, cav and eastern auxes.
Rest in the west - once near the frontline, aty could support western and eastern groups.

Didn't need to build an airfield, because the paras arrived fast enough in the northwest.

Since i'm at 15 Leaders, the Leader Trigger couldn't be used (is okay though: i had several test games in the past months, where i struggled to get Leaders).

When Gibraltar's opening screen with new items popped up, i was very happy about my lazyness at previous HQ: not only new USMC, but also new US stuff became available (the AAR only shows new items appearing for [nations in current] scenario, so this was a nice surprise)

2x airborne inf, a fighter, bomber and rcn aircraft headed to the northeast.

2x marines, a tank, eng, rcn car and some navy support sailed to the northwest.

The rest of the army landed as fast as possible, to make use of their higher on-ground speed.

Half of the fleet sailed east, to intercept the announced enemy navy.

For the abn inf and the eastern flotilla this was a scary endeavour (especially for abn) - maybe i still play too aggressive.
For the rest of the units this was smooth sailing.

Abn inf with ftr and bomber support attacked the western airfield (6,10).
With the experience from Gibraltar i was a bit afraid to send the abn on further adventures - after all, no ground forces had landed yet - but anyway i let them jump on Air Transport again and fly to other targets.

Army units landed at the large bay around the central flag (18,19) in 2 waves (actually 3 waves, since a single unit already landed in turn 4).

Navy, instead of splitting into groups, concentrated on "battles of decision" with enemy navy. Without aerial recon i would have probably split them - and then run into troubles.

Mrn landed as fast as possible, abn headed for SH in the eastern mountains - seeing the weak defenses 1 waited in ATP and then continued to the coastal SH.

Deployed on land: 2x aty, Flak, M8 + M20 rcn, tank, 1x eng and rangers.

Put the B-17 to use, by attacking town and airfield VHs.

I think that the Sicilian part of the scenario doesn't work very well:
- 2x inf (with GTP) and Mountain/Alpine Leader literally rush through the mountains
- rest of AI units (out of curiosity and confusion i loaded the xscn file in turn 4 = after AI turn 3) actually move southwest = farther away, instead of towards VHs or the combat zone. Only past that some finally move in northeastern or eastern direction (others try to cross the mountains in southern direction

)

Maybe placing the whole group directly in the north (cape area between VH (13,5) and coastal flag (19,8)) would help.
I'm also not quite sure of the Alpine Leaders - at least i would recommend to not pairing them with GTP (GTP take over the ability too), but maybe this was intended to spice up the scenario.
