OpenSuite question

Post by KAASKOP »

I haven't played for a year or two and was used to the previous iteration of OpenSuite. I used it to sometimes edit units in saved files, usually to remove a useless leader. It always asks for a PANZER2.dat file, but in the past I just referred to the OpenIcons.dat or copied that one and renamed it PANZER2.dat. Regardless, my issue is as follows:

I have either lost my touch and incidentally lost some knowledge, or things have changed. The way to change units seems to have changed, I now have to click on 'Unit Settings View' and when I alter the slightest of things, like just the name of a unit, save it, then OpenGeneral refuses to open the newly saved save file.

It says this:

Can't use this executable to load this file, this must be a newer one!

and then

It is not an OpenGen saved file.

What am I missing?

The rule is - we use Suite compatible with the game engine
Suite 5.0.73.13 is compatible with the 0.93.5.RC6 engine, but not with previous game engines
Also, the 0.93.5.RC6 game engine is not compatible with earlier versions of the Suite

Edit
The newest game engine asks if you accept the received leader
You have the choice to reject or accept it...

To be honest, I have no idea which version I play. I used the complete installer from here as a new install on a new laptop.

https://www.open-general.com/installer.php

That used to work. I looked at the individual downloadable file for Opensuit and it seems to be identical in regards to file size and date.

I currently have Opensuite 5.0.73.13. I'm still looking with engine I have, but I assume it is 0.93.5.RC6.

Edit:

My apologies, it is not, it is 0.93.5.RC1.c * 1 jan 2024. I seems the development of both files is not on par with each other, when looking at the individual downloadable update packages here:

https://www.open-general.com/installer-core.php

Is there a way to get an older version of Opensuite? Or a newer version of the core engine?

Edit 2:

I got it. I have to use opengenRC.exe.

Sympatyk, is it possible to get the OpenSuite that is compatible with 0.93.5.RC1.c, (the OpenGen.exe version). I like to play a campaign with the Atomic efile, but it seems to be unstable with the opengenRC.exe (0.93.5.RC6 as we speak). It seems to be stalbe with 0.93.5.RC1.c. Would be nice to have an Opensuite.exe that works with the opengen.exe, not only the opengenRC.exe.

Yes, it's very confusing with all the different versions. Maybe, if there are no bugs reported in the next weeks, Luis can release a new complete installer, so everyone can get to the same version again.

Suite compatible with previous versions of the game engine ( 0.93.5.RC1.c)

Remember - if the save was edited in a newer version of the suite --> it may not be currently correct ... (in an older version of the suite)

Honestly, I didn't notice/read your message from 2024-08-30 10:53, Friday ...
I've only just noticed it now

So I'll write for the sake of accuracy that the game installation from
https://www.open-general.com/installer.php
on 2024-07-30 05:55 contains two game engines
- 0.93.5.RC6
- 0.93.5.RC1.c
but one Suite file - 5.0.73.13
So the 0.93.5.RC6 engine + Suite - 5.0.73.13 are a complete set --> but - 0.93.5.RC1.c does not have a corresponding Suite --> this is confusing
The Suite file I shared (5.0.73.8 from January) on Google Drive is a pair for the 0.93.5.RC1.c engine

Yes, like i said, if no more bugs are reported maybe Luis can release a official version of the game and suite soon, so everybody can get on the same version again. It's confusing with the various RCs and people who might not visit the forum often play with later versions.

There is a small inconvenience
If you open the save game, make some changes (move a unit, add anything to the HQ)
Then click save game - it will overwrite without warning - the save game file (you have to remember to change the name of the save file)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/140AEpA ... sp=sharing

Can you check it? - to be sure..

Yes I plan to promote the last RC to a new release, changing the way releases are named.
Next release will use a version structured based on date, like: "OpenGeneral 24.10.12" ( if released 12th October 2024) and same for Suite.
And for RC releases version would be called yy.mm.dd-RC to show clearly that it is version under testing. When any RC will requiere a specific Suite release, version will be appended too with "Same_OG_Date-RC".

So checking OG and Suite releases should be easier to know about compatibility since that change.

But editing saved games made with older OG releases with new Suite releases is always dangerous.

The safer rule is to use always last OG release with last Suite release or to check the changelog page at my site.
