Cannot upgrade auxiliary units?

Hello, it's been a while since I've played OG so I I'm not sure anymore, but wasn't it possible to upgrade auxiliary units? I mean there is little reason to not to, if I want to spend the money..

It has never been possible to upgrade auxiliary units, either in old PG, PG2 or OG ...
Only core units can be upgraded and only before closing the first HQ panel.

Actually, it is possible to do so under PG1-DOS (aka "old PG" ). This can always be done during scenario play by placing the unit to be upgraded on any friendly, urban or airfield hex, as the case may be (i.e., ground or air unit). In order for the upgrade to be successful, the unit must already find itself placed in such a fashion at the very start of its friendly half-turn. Any enemy unit adjacency blocks the intended upgrade. By the way, the foregoing auxiliary unit upgrade capability has rendered "coreless" campaigns practical and eminently playable.

The preceding paragraph notwithstanding, SSI's PG2 manual clearly states:

You can only upgrade units from the Field Headquarters screen between battles.

That's play system evolution...

Ah, PGDOS, good old times. Anyway, I think I remember now - pretty sure Panzer Corps allows upgrades to auxiliary units. Ah well.

So JP's is gone, huh? I sure hope I kept my notes on PG modding somewhere..
