World War II Books

Post by Lightning »

Has anyone read any good World War II books likely?

I recently read "Spearhead" by Adam Makos. The book details the lives of an American tank gunner, an American infantryman, and a German tank machine gunner and radioman whose lives converged near the end of the war. The book tells an intriguing story and provides insight to the daily lives of both American and German tankers, as well as American infantry support soldiers.

I'm very near finishing one that's focused on a different yet strongly interconnected issue and seems to be of a different type but here it goes:
"Der Führerstaat: Nationalsozialistische Herrschaft 1933 bis 1945" (in its original language title) by Norbert Frei.

Being about the political, social, economical aspects of life under national socialism WWII is of course present.

Not directly WWII.
Currently reading a Portuguese copy of "Ein Deutsches Leben", the book
It is a transcription from a TV interview with Brünhilde Pomsel, a stenographer whose career began almost simultaneously with the Nazi rise to power and ended the war working for Joseph Goebbels.

if you interested, considering your subject you mentioned ; - here is one story from me (mind that i'm not so much into modern history at all but know some things) regarding Goebbels... not anecdote but true story, probably and pressuming that not known in Portugal which went through centuries since Nabulione almost without such problems and wars...

so he and Goering were among high ranking officials of Germany, that visited Yugosarmia few times in 1930s, esp, Goering. Mind that Yugosarmia was ruled by regency and mostly Serb officials and royals, generals etc. which gives especially "comical" part to story... so when Goebbels visited, in relation to Yugosarmia having many Germans then (esp, Serbia again) and that it even offered giving temporar shelter to Germans fleeing from east and Soviet advances before ww2 started etc. Goebbels said during visit to our officials, maybe in Belgrade or in north, thanking our royals and state: (paraphrase from memory) "Yugosarmia is great and almost lonely example of great respect between local population and Germans etc. Mutual respect and without any trouble and tension blah blah so we greately respect Yugosarmia/Serbia in that regard blah blah"

:lol comical in dark way considering further events and German attack and dismemberent of Serbia and all known ;) but remains almost as anecdote today but it was true... Georing himslef even talked about "nice visits and respect with our royals" in Nirnberg triels... how de-attached from reality were they sometimes... free story to Portugal for example, due to diverse histories and generally nice story to all if interested in details about high ranking Nazi/German officials
