Playtest: Allied Invasion of Italy

After ruling the world in Imperialism II i'll now come back to OG for a final playtest of my "Allied Invasioof Italy" camapign. It's been a while since i designed and played it and i fell like i have already fofgotten everything. I labeled the campaign as easy, so it shoudn't be too hard

I also added a new little commando operation scenario at the end of the campaign. So there are 14 scenarios now.

Current scenario: Operation Corkscrew: Pantelleria

The first task is the capturing of the beautiful island of Pantelleria. I love the map. Kudos to Lama

In the opening turns of the scenario more and more allied units appear in the southwest. Planes will do the bulk of the fighting in this scenario. I don't want to reveal to much, but a BV is mandatory here...

Current scenario: Operation Corkscrew: Lampedusa

After capturing Pantelleria our task force is ordered to capture the island of Lampedusa.
I had hoped for a tank or artillery proto, but got a fighter. At least it is a all weather fighter

Bought an additional infantry at HQ.

I sent all units to the island and tried to keep my naval transports out of range of the italian coastal gun(s). So the infantry landed in the northwest of Lampedusa while the ships and planes did the bulk of the fighting. Both fighters got leaders in the process.
When my infantry units entered the fighting in the eastern part of the island, the italian garrison fell quickly and the whole island was in my hands soon. Now it is time to head for a bigger island, Sicily...

Current scenario: Operation Husky: Gela

Got some units at HQ and around 2500pp which i used to buy some more units. Of course

After deployment i sent the aux paratroopers to the eastern airfield and aux infantry up to the north. All other units were heading towards Gela. A fleet of cruisers and destroyers provided naval fire support.
I tried to keep my core units (naval transports) out of sight and out of range of the enemy artillery, but later when some more enemy bombers arrived some of my core units got hit hard.
Bit by bit all naval transports got unloaded at the beaches around Gela. Meanwhile the paratroopers had captured the airfield and 4 aux infantry units were about to launch an attack on the northeastern VH. Few km north of Gela i met a incomming column of enemy armor. Again my core troops got some serious hits but with the help of many units and all planes, i was able to destroy all tanks. The last VH fell quickly.

Current scenario: Operation Husky: Sicily

At HQ i aquired another tank and two infantries.
After deployment i split my units into two battlegroups. One had to march to the most western part of Sicily and one had to move northwards along the eastern coast and the Messina Strait. In the west i tried to gain ground fast and at the beginning there was only little fighting. In the east i built a long line and moved slowly northwards. Again some of my units got hit by enemy planes.
The western battlegroup got split again. Some units drove along the coast and some crossed the northern mountain range. Later they should meet again when the final battle for Palermo, capital of Sicilia, begun.
In the east i finaly was able to destroy all defence positions and denfenders and captured the last VH. All my core units in the east got hit badly and were in bad codition at the end of the fight. BV would have been possible few turns before the limit, so i think the "easiness" is okay

Now - after most of Sicilia is under control - the next task will be the capturing of Messina and the crossing of the Messina Strait.

Current scenario: Stretto di Messina

So after most of the island of Sicily is in allied hands we now have to capture the northeastern tip around Messina and also sail across the Strait of Messina and land on mainland Italy.

But first i got a bomber proto. Then i downgraded (just minus 12pp) my first all weather proto fighter into a fighter with better attack stats but without the all weather special. I also acquired a second recon, a towed AT and a self-propelled Flak.

Well, the tactics are simple in this scenario. I deployed half my core in the west and half got embarked in naval transports and was ordered to cross the Messina Strait and make landfall south of Regio Calabria. A British infantry division appears soon after the scenario started and helped in the east.

So i sent my units northwards on the western shore and did so as well on the eastern shore after my units had landed there. A strong allied fleet sailed northwards in the Strait of Messina and provided naval fire support.
BV would have been possible few turns before the limit but as usual i played until the last turn. My second recon car picked up the leader trigger.

I just noticed that both my recon cars got the Bridging leader

And i can already reveal that by the end of the upcomming scenario i will have received the Skilled Reconnaissance leader 3 times

Current scenario: Operation Avalanche

Haha! Surprise, surprise

The crossing of the Strait of Messina was not the major allied operation to land on mainland Italy... The major landing will take place around Salerno. In fact, my axuliary units are about to land and as you can see on the picture, 3 aux units have already landed when the scenario starts.

But first i got another proto, a SPAT, and i bought an additional infantry and an artillery as well.

While the auxiliary units start around Salerno, the core units have to start in the soutwest. My core units made landfall at the whole coast from the southern map edge up to the north of Salerno. The aux units all landed at Salerno and prepared for the defence of the bridgehead. The aux pioneer built an airfield, so i could deploy my planes.
There were some small german counterattacks in the north and later in the south too. My units got dispersed very much across the whole map and at the end i got surprised in the south when a tank and an armored infantry appeared on the scene.

But due to my bad habit of "wanting to kill all enemies with my core units", life is always harder than it has to be. I often hold back my aux units when none of my core units is close enough to grab the kill

Anyway, i had enough units in the north to grind my way through the german defences and up to the northern airfield. Made my usual last turn BV.

Current scenario: The Volturno Line

At HQ i upgraded one of the bombers and bought the best British night fighter (all weather). After some turns into the scenario i bought a Scottish Highlanders infantry unit with two attachments. The Highlanders instantly gained a leader when they got the first exp bar.

I deployed my units at the two SHs. After initial deployment my units in the souths destroyed the barriers which were blocking the bridges and crossed the Volturno river while in the east the units took the way up to the north along the eastern map edge.

The next objective in the south was the german airfield. The way was blocked by another river and my approach was slowed down. I used the bridging units to cross the river in the south and attacked the airfield from behind. The southern battlegroup then got split and most units took the way to the center of the map while 4 units were driving to the western VH.

Meanwhile the eastern battlegroup had reached the shores of the Volturno river in the north and began to shell the other side. My bridging leader recon car helped the other units to get to the other side and take the VH.

All of my units then attacked the last VH where the AI had gathered a lot of units. Some of my own units took serious hits but i was much superior in numbers and eventually destroyed all enemy units and defenses. Played until the last turn... like always

Current scenario: Operation Shingle

The allied offensive came to an halt at the german Gustav Line, a defensive line between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. The High Command decided to launch an amphibious landing in the back of the Gustave Line. This operation will be carried out by the player's core army and auxiliary troops.

But before the fighting started, i got a Rangers infantry proto. Then i upgraded one tank and bought another one as well as few attachments.
When the scenario started few units had already made landfall, but most are still at sea. So i unloaded all my troops in the first 3 turns and sent them out to build a defensive perimeter around the landing zone. The Germans got completely surprised and there was only little resistance in the opening stage of the battle. A aux builder unit built two airfields and i deployed my planes.
I then expanded the beachhead and captured all VHs. Now the German attacks started. Most of them came from the north but there was also a armoured division comming from the east.
I guess i was to hasty when my units were leaving the defensive line in order to capture some flags. I had to order my units back for defensive duties

The fighting went on and eventually all attackers got destroyed and BV was mine. There were some turns of rain and thanks to my all weather bomber and fighter i ruled the skies

I am thinking about adding a 15h scenario to the campaign, Urica's new Verona map. I have to see if i find enough enemies for a scenario in the Verona area

Current scenario: Operation Diadem

At HQ i tweaked some attachments and bought a big gun.

Back to the Gustav Line and Monte Cassino. The monastery had been bombed by allied forces and german paratroopers took position in the ruins.
Our mission is to penetrate the Gustave Line, conquer the Monte Cassino monastery and capture the surrounding area.

The german paratroopers were well entrenched and overstrengthed and i shelled and bombed them for quite a while before i lanuched a concentrated infantry attack on the monastery. By that time most of my units had already passed Monte Cassino and approached the other objectives.

After few turns i completely forgot that there is a VH north of Cassino

and later had to order more units to the north. Still, i was able to silence any opposition by the end of the 12th turn and made BV a little early

Current scenario: Liberation of Rome

At HQ i upgraded another tank and the combat engineers. Then i bought a second SPAD. Now i think i should have bought another bomber instead of the upgrades and SPAD.

Well, there are no special tactics in this scenario. Just push towards Rome. The capital is lightly defended. In fact it was declared an open city. Of course the AI does not understand this concept, so the roman VHs are still (lightly) defended. But the bulk of the fighting takes place outside of the city. I think it is ok like this.

So i moved my units from the southeast to the northwest across the center of the map. Most fighting took place south of Rome and at the western coastal VH were my ships provided some naval fire support.

Current scenario: Operation Brassard

While the allied army is slowly grinding its way to the north of Italy, there are still islands under german control. We don't need enemies in our backyard and so Operation Brassard is launched. This scenario is a fine little commando operation, the liberation of the island of Elba. The briefing says that only ships and infantry or other light units should be deployed and i follwed my own advice

At HQ i bought temporary attachments for my infantry units.

I deployed my units in the south and sailed northwards alongside the auxiliary units. Later British commandos appeared in the east.
My fighting ships and aux planes tried to find save spots for my units to land. Of course i didn't want my precious naval transports to get shelled by german coastal guns. Most of my units made landfall along the southern coast of Elba. Then i took out the enemy units one by one and captured the VHs. My cruiser played a valuable role in this battle

Current scenario: The Gothic Line

I made the HQ last night and i forget to sell the temporary attachments i bought for some infantry units in the previous scenario

It is also time to sell the 3 core ships. I don't like to sell core units but it makes no sense to keep them because there won't be any naval scenarios for the remainder of the campaign. I hope the players read the briefing and follow the advice to sell the ships

I also got a towed AT with horse transport

Don't know why horses - there are trucks available. All the time i thought a proto will always get the best available transport. I think i will upgrade the towed AT later... Finaly i upgraded a fighter and bought a bomber.

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force arrives on the scene and joins the player's core army

Overall 6 Brazilian units join the core, 3 infantry units, a recon, a artillery and a fighter.

After deployment i moved northwards in the center and at the eastern and western map edge. Most units were in the center and only 3 in the east. The northern half of the map is completely covered with mountains and hills and i mostly followed the roads and took shortcuts when possible. The germans were dispersed across the whole map and there were little skirmishes everywhere.

The difficulty of the scenario was okay, but i think for a campaign labeled as "easy" it is a little to hard and i will lower the difficulty a bit. I will also add one turn to the victory limits.

Current scenario: Operation Roast

Before the allied forces launch their 1945 major spring offensive into the Po Valley a small detachement is ordered to clear the eastern flank, namely the area south of Comacchio, a spit of land which seperates the Comacchio Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea.

The briefing tells the player to deploy light units only and i decided to deploy my 105mm gun and most of my infantry units. My infantry department should get some training here...
At HQ i bought 3 strengh points for the 105mm and a lot of temporary attachments for the infantry units.

When you look at the map, you will understand that there are no special tactics required in this scenario

Just push northwards with all your units and destroy the dispersed german defenders.

I forgot to mention that i upgraded some of the infantry units in the last scenario

Current scenario: Spring Offensive '45

Got a tank proto. Then i sold most of the attachments and bought another tank and upgraded two ATs. I also bought a Brazilian Builder unit with attachments. It should build an airfield at the beginning of the scenario. After some turns, when i had aquirred enough prestige, a bought another infantry, a Brazilian AT infantry.

There are 3 SHs as well as few deployment hex in the northern Apennine Mountains. After deployment the allied army lanched its 1945 Spring Offensive and my units took the roads down to the Po Valley.
The first objective was the large city of Bologna in the (southern) center of the map. I attacked it from 3 directions. Before i was able to capture the city, i took the airfield north of Bologna. Most of my units then met north of the airfield and built a defensive line to repell a incomming german attack.
Meanwhile my western battlegroup took the city of Modena.
Most units moved to the northeast and i lacked some firepower in the west when the units in the west got damaged in the battles. So i ordered some units and my planes to the west.
I played until the last turn so i could capture all flags.

I'll add one more scenario to this campaign, Verona, but first i want to finish my next map for the other allied campaign
