Windows 10 performace issue

Post by Ramon »

Hi,
Sometimes when loading a game in OG the program freezes. After a while (1 minute or so) it stars working again.
I don't know if is just my computer or someone else have a similar issue.
The odd think is that is not always... usually when I start the game and them randomly. But sometimes never happens... :-?
I'm an IT person and did some investigation... but nothing in the logs.. the Task manager looks ok. Just not responding... :(

I do have (Win11, but also previously under WinXP) sometimes periods OG seems to not do anything, always during the AI turn: AI does stuff, and then comes (sometimes) a pause where you see nothing happening (but there could be movement in the unexplored parts of the map?), then you see some AI movement again, and then the AI's turn is over.
This has been happening for years (but not every turn and not every scenario), always during the AI turn, and I usually blamed it on the huge amounts of units I usually give the AI to look after (>100). I assumed the AI was calculating possibilities on the units off-screen - or that it just took a breather... :lol

Those "pauses" can (rarely) last up to 20 seconds (on a 20-core i7, as much as on my previous CoreDuo), and happen even with a reasonably small amount of AI units in the scenario. But as I said not every turn in a given scenario, which would rule out the amount of AI units, if this didn't usually happen in the beginning and middle of the scenario, and never near the end, when the AI has few units and options left. :huh

It definitely seems to have something to do with AI calculations (I use AI 3.0 for the record), but rather triggered by situation than by AI unit quantity.

I have this phenomenon too but only seldom. More boring is the no reply message in the Suite where you have to click and wait some 10-20 seconds for the answer :grumpy

??? What do you mean?
OpenSuite is quite fast for me, except when working on an big E-File and changing display indexing (like, from numbers to names). In this case there is (for me) a 2-3 seconds pause while it rearranges the 6000+ unit list.

Sounds rather like the forum here: Click, and go fetch a cup of coffee till the page loads... :(

I have noticed the same delay from time to time, None. Can't remember wich scenario/turn, but I'll start making notes about this. I have a feeling this happens in the same scenario/turn every time. As for you Hoza, I have never experienced any delay in the Suite. Only what None describes. But I'm not a designer, so I mostly use the Suite to remove an unwanted leader or to skip a scenario I don't want to play. Anyway, the most annoying delay is at this forum... Have a nice day :)

For the Forum as long as we have e.g. Amazon [bots] as registered users you will be able to fetch a lot of coffee :(

For the Suite the delay with no reply shows e.g. when I am clicking in a loaded scenario map for infos of a specific unit

Oh no, those are innocent. The culprit are the chatbot training bots, which don't identify, and thus show as "guests". Check the forum index page, especially during the European mornings there is a slew of "guests" (right now it says "2 registered, 0 hidden and 777 guests").
Not only those AI bots are thousands, but they continuously scrape the whole internet to train their chatbots, making a new connection every second. :(
We are not they only ones having this AI bot problem, it's a general issue, but the OG server not being very powerful we suffer from it much more than others.

That's strange, on mine when I right-click on a unit to get/edit info, there is indeed a pause of 2-3 seconds before the window appears, but that's all. And it's not because this computer is fairly powerful, it was the same on my ancient CoreDuo under WinXP, always a couple seconds (3 at most) before the window appears.
