Resolution Issues or Bugs (Help!)

Post by Semkot »

When the game is running in my desktop resolution, I can barely make out the interface buttons. If I lower the resolution, then I see the picture as attached to the message.

How can I lower the resolution so that the picture stretches to the full screen instead of being displayed in the center? The entire screen is filled with Black, and in the center of it is a small square in which the game is displayed. As you can see, even the window does not fit and a part is cut off. I've been looking for a solution for three days, but I haven't found an answer.

For a long time now the game has been played only in full screen (not in a window)
We set (select) the resolution for the game according to the image --> from the drop-down list we select the resolution appropriate for us

Image

It all depends on the size of the screen in inches
e.g. as you can see in the image - for a 27-inch screen I use Full HD resolution (1920x1080)

Additionally, keyboard shortcuts

Code: Select all

<Ctrl><Wheel> Zoom in/out map (the current #zoom level)
+ Zoom in the current #zoom view
<Alt> + Zoom in the current #zoom view
 - Zoom out the current #zoom view
_ Zoom out the current #zoom view
<Alt> - Zoom out the current #zoom view
Z Zoom Reset current #zoom view to 100%

Yes, thanks for the reply. I know where the resolution is changing, and I've changed it.

The default was Full HD and it's too small for me. I have set a different resolution. Now when I start the game, it is displayed in the center of the screen and there are black fields around it. At the same time, the size of the buttons does not change in any way, they are just as small.

I can't take a screenshot because it only records what's in the center of the screen. And black fields are not recorded. I drew what it looks like.

Hi Semkot, :welcome to the forum

Have you tried to set a different scale or DPI in windows settings ?
Maybe using different settings you could see the game better, but OG doesn't handles changes on scale/DPI, so you would need to set and reset manually.

Hi Luis
What is the maximum resolution of the game that can be set? --> to the maximum desktop (screen) resolution --> 2k (2560 x 1440), 4k(3840 x 2160 pixels)?

The only change I remember making was the font size in the system. I have windows 7. I tried to set the default value, but the game is displayed exactly the same way. In the center of the screen. I attached a picture showing where I resized the fonts.

I've tried turning on the Aero, and turning off the Aero, it doesn't help either.

I started my old computer with Win 7 + 24-inch monitor
I changed the screen resolution (default/recommended 1920x1080) to 1280x720
All elements on the screen were enlarged
I started the game - the game started in 1920x1080 resolution --> because that was the game setting
I made several tests with different settings --> The game always starts with the settings saved in the game settings, regardless of the monitor resolution set!
I ran the test on the version of the game that was originally installed there

The question arises
What version of the game do you have installed?
Is this your first adventure with OG?
Is the game installed outside the system folders?
Is some "security" program blocking OG?
Do the graphics card settings allow external programs to change the resolution?

1. game version

2. first. I played Panzer General 2 and I have it now. I wanted to try something beyond the basic companies of the game.

3. path = d:\Games\Open General\

4. No. I don't use antiviruses or similar programs. I have experience in IT, and I already intuitively know whether my PC is infected or not. If there is a suspicion, then I use a one-time check of the entire PC. I checked it this week. Everything was OK.

5. I don't understand what you mean. Different games work fine. Even the old Panzer General 2 is working. I have never seen a similar problem that results in the game being displayed in the center of the screen on my computers.
-------------

as I understand it, when you change the settings, the game changes its resolution. But the picture does not stretch over the entire screen, but is displayed in its center. At the same time, even Alt+Tab shows the rest of the applications in the same way in this small square in the center of the screen. I don't know why, but the OS is changing the resolution somehow incorrectly. In the picture below, the Calculator is displayed in the center of the screen just like the rest of the game. The Alt+Tab function does not work. When I switch apps, they just appear on top of the game. I can place a browser in the center of the screen in this window and surf the Internet. It was as if my desktop had become small and was located in the center of the screen, and the game was running there.

I did it. It doesn't work. The result is the same as before.

In addition, I tried to run the game with different graphics cards. There are 2 of them on this laptop. In both cases, the result is the same.

If you still want to - then you need to determine where the problem lies --> on the side of the game or the operating system

To check if the resolution change works correctly --> you need to change the screen resolution and see how it will look
Try to set the screen resolution to 1280x720

Image

If it behaves correctly and your desktop reaches 1280x720px --> start the game and select the resolution option - Restore Desktop

Image

Write what happens then

I set the resolution as shown in the pictures. Launched the game.

If I select the Restore Desktop option, then the image stretches normally to the full screen. The buttons are getting bigger and I can see them normally.

BUT if I choose a specific resolution of 1280x720, then I get EXACTLY the same picture as before. It is in the center of the screen and there are black fields around it. At the same time, the monitor resolution returns to Full HD (The size of the image in the center of the screen corresponds to the height and width of 1280x720 physical monitor pixels), although it was 1280x720 before the game was launched. When I close the game, the desktop resolution returns to 1280x720

I installed the new version of the game on an old computer with Win 7 --> checked the resolution change --> works correctly
This is the final confirmation that the game is ok
So far, no one has reported a bug like yours

So the problem lies with your computer - incorrect driver, or none

It seems that if you want to use OG --> the best solution is to select the option - "save settings to disk" --> third image from the previous message and "Restore Desktop"
Before starting the game, set the correct screen resolution for you

To be sure of this solution - you should try with several screen resolution settings ... (of course, the game should be set only once)

I will only add that it is worth checking the font, media, interface settings (everything in the 3rd image)
You can also hide the windows bar

In addition to e-files and campaigns included in the downloaded installation - there are many others
I can recommend a Polish site (you can also download the entire game and maps installation here)

I think there is a misunderstanding.
Please correct me, but i think the size of the user interface, menu, buttons, windows and panels always stays the same - no matter the resolution setting.
It is just that for example in the game the map becomes bigger with a bigger resolution and more hex are visible. But the side bar and buttons always keeps the same size! Same with the scenario intro and outro windows - they always keep the same size, no matter the resolution.

EDIT: Also when i compare my laptop and desktop PC with different resolutions, everything has the same size, only the map is bigger in the game.

You're right
Luis set some game windows to permanent, and others can be scaled

The problem that Semkot writes about --> is the problem of a monitor that is too small (screen size expressed in inches) at native resolution (Full HD)

If we assume that on a 24-inch monitor, a 1920x1080px image is clearly visible --> then on a 15-inch monitor (laptop) --> the surface area of this image, in relation to the base 24-inch monitor --> will be 0.39 (39%)
because 15/24=0.625 --> area 0.625*0.625=0.39

So on a 15-inch monitor, we are watching a reduced image 2.56 times
because 100/39=2.56

Conclusion --> you can't physically enlarge the monitor, so you have to reduce the resolution so that the same proportions are maintained --> monitor diagonal (in inches) to image (in pixels)

1920/1280=1.5
1080/720=1.5
1.5*1.5=2.25
so 1280x720 or slightly lower resolution is suitable for a 15 inch monitor (so that the image is as visible as on a 24 inch monitor)
Of course, you will only see part of the image --> the whole thing is 1920x1080px, and you only see 1280*720px

Currently, to see well I use a 27 inch screen (my eyes are getting weaker)

Good. I realized that this is the first time this problem has occurred. This is definitely due to the combination of the Game and my PC. Something happens as a result of their interaction, and the result I wrote about is obtained. I will try to figure it out.

And the buttons increase in size if I set the desktop resolution lower than the native one for my laptop. Then I select the Restore Desktop setting in the game and the picture stretches over the entire monitor, and the buttons increase. The problem appears as soon as I try to set a SPECIFIC resolution inside the game. Then everything breaks down.

Thanks for the answers.
