Making videos for OG

Post by sympatyk »

We are moving the topic from Pub
viewtopic.php?t=1023
Major Heinz wrote: 2024-07-19 00:04, Friday Hi Sympatyk, so let`s talk about making videos with OBS for Open General.
It's relatively easy. But there are a few things to watch out for. Game recording doesn't work with Open General and I don't think window recording works either. That's why it's actually only possible via screen recording. This is also relatively easy to set up. You just have to set your screen size in Open General and then set this size in the OBS settings. You just have to cut out the first and last seconds of each video when you jump from OBS to the game or vice versa. But you can probably get around that with a shotcut. But I'm not that familiar with that. The presets are also quite simple. When you install OBS, your PC sets the program to work best for your PC. I think you just have to select your microphone and your speakers.
Oh yes, one more thing: screen recording sometimes doesn't work right away (the screen stays black instead of you being able to see your screen in OBS). There's some trick to get around this right away, but I'd have to read up on it myself (I haven't taken a screen capture in a while).
:howdy
Thank you very much for your answer
I think that the topic of recording game videos and the experiences related to it deserve a serious approach to the topic (more than a pub)

Why am I taking up this topic?
Recently, Duke Falcon - published his recording
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQRbMnYM8WM
also with us Hansen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZTtbpObQGs

What do these recordings have in common? --> technical issues - quality
I wondered what it was like --> recordings from 7 years ago were of better quality than the current ones?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJNM1dQS8qY

I also watched your videos
https://www.youtube.com/@ArthurBedur

I figured you were the person to talk to about recording your game
Personally, I don't have an account on YouTube.com, but I made some videos - e.g. smack for the campaign
viewtopic.php?t=202

Would you be in favor of treating this topic more technically and presenting it to people who would like to share their game?

I suggest moving it to viewforum.php?f=7
or create a new topic and link to it here
Another option is a new topic on the Polish subforum
viewforum.php?f=67
Then the material will be in English and Polish...

What do you think?
I am waiting for your answer
Major Heinz wrote: 2024-07-19 11:54, Friday Ah okay, I see what you mean with your question to talk about the recording.
Yes, it can be moved but I don`t know what i have to do to move it.

Speaking about video quality: That depends on various factors. For example, the correct screen size setting in OBS. For example, I used to have bad internet. When I streamed with a friend, I had to lower the video resolution significantly. And sometimes I forgot to put them back up before recording the video. That's a problem. I also think the screen capture in and of itself is a problem. But OBS does not recognize Open General as a game and therefore does not record the game. That's the big difference to PG2. PG2 is recognized as a game. And ultimately the question is what kind of screen you have and what kind of screen the viewer has. My current PC has a large screen connected to it. Then when I start screen recording, the viewer must also have a similar screen. Otherwise the videos are blurry (can be seen with the SC3 parts currently on my channel). And looking on your handy isn't a good idea because you can't see anything. By the way, SC3 is similar to Open General. It only works via screen recording.
But I'm not satisfied with the quality of my videos either. The main problem is the sound. I also comment and no microphone seems to be working properly with my new PC. Either the sound is too quiet or if I amplify it a lot, then I overload or there is a strange cracking noise (that was the problem with the first video from CC03). At some point I would have to get an external sound card to solve the problem, because it seems to be due to the built-in sound card.
:howdy
Let me start a new topic then
Making videos for OG - on the Polish subforum

We will copy the messages from the current location and then delete them - we will provide a link to the new topic
OK?
I will show you how you can record OG as a game and we will talk about sound..

Two videos for comparison --> please watch in full screen and in a 1280x720 window, this is approximately 65% of the screen at resolution. 1920x1080
Which one looks better in both versions (full screen and 720p window)?

I personally like the first video more in both ways. Yes, the units are smaller, but I think the number of the units are cleaner. I think this is more important, because if the viewers can`t see how strong a unit still is, it is more problematic to follow a scenario.

Thanks for the answer
The question should be - which video is better for uploading to Youtube?
And now one more thing - is such a recording ok on YouTube?
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-yKluq ... sp=sharing

Now I will show you how to record the OG game from a window (not the desktop)
Sorry - it's a bit chaotic, because I was recording from two sources and I got a bit lost (I couldn't minimize OBS to a bar because I marked it in OG - hide the bar)

Once OBS is open - select -studio mode
- choose an image that will start (and end) the recording
- using transition place it on the right screen (in studio mode)
- launch the game so that the game window and an additional pop-up window (e.g. campaign selection) are visible
- add new image source --> game capture --> capture specific window --> [OpenGen ]:SDL Window
- add next source --> window capture --> select -->[OpenGen]:(nul) --> you can position it relative to the screen..
You can turn on recording, make a transition (everything in the right pane of OBS - records)
To start recording, skip, end recording - use keys (keyboard shortcuts)
It's hard to find ones that won't interfere with the game - Luis has assigned several shortcut options in the game

Two movies
Recording - how I did it
https://drive.google.com/file/d/102RaSo ... sp=sharing
Recording - what OBS recorded at that time
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-yxbmD ... sp=sharing

Of course, if you record from a window - turn off the desktop visibility in OBS
One drawback - if you select on both windows - use the mouse - you can see two mouse pointers in the recording - when the additional window is open

---------------------------------------------------------

Dwa filmy
Nagrywanie - jak to zrobiłem
https://drive.google.com/file/d/102RaSo ... sp=sharing
Nagranie – co w tamtym czasie nagrał OBS
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-yxbmD ... sp=sharing

Oczywiście jeśli nagrywasz z okna - wyłącz widoczność pulpitu w OBS
Jedna wada - jeśli zaznaczysz w obu oknach - użyj myszki - w nagraniu widać dwa wskaźniki myszy - gdy otwarte jest dodatkowe okno

The video resolution is a problem, because it depends always what kind of device the viewer has. If the player has a fat screen TV or a big screen at his computer full HD is the best, but for handys maybe a smaller resolution is better.

Anyway, I was remembering that the problem with window capture was that only the game was recorded and not the popups. But with this method it is possible to record both :yes

I have made a little video with your instructions

https://drive.google.com/file/d/14YfL4r ... sp=sharing

Yes, I don`t have done it with the picture at the beginning, because I don`t have such an picture at the moment. And I have also seen that I have to change the position of the popups, because now they are positioned top left and not in the middle.

The video is in 1600x900 size. I have to change it definitely at my other PC (at the moment I am not at home and only have an old PC).

I see you use 200% magnification a lot in your videos..
The map looks messy, it is not in an indexed color - like classic maps..

Can you give me some examples of videos you have uploaded to the Y platform --> their size, weight (kB), and display time?

-------------------------------------------------

Yes, the map looks other than the normal maps. But it was the right map for the scenario (Collapse of Army Group Center) because it is so big. The normal maps are too small for battles like this.

Some examples from Youtube from the several campaigns I had made a playthrough:

https://youtu.be/BeRgKR1NqRg
Size 3,16GB
1600x900 Screen Solution
54:42 Duration

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HasmN3uDC3E
Size 10,2 GB
2560x1440 Screen Solution
1:25:49 Duration

https://youtu.be/mol-ZES_o2k
Size 498 MB
912x514 Screen Solution (I think that I had forgotten to change screen solution after a livestream)
29:21 Duration

https://youtu.be/X7SzgTnHT6o
Size 837 MB
1600x900 Screen Solution
1:23:06 Duration

https://youtu.be/RMSpQE1759o
Size 1,3 GB
1600x900 Screen Solution
31:00 Duration

https://youtu.be/shnOMY13Aug
Size 3,17 GB
1600x900 Screen Solution
1:13:59 Duration

I think the biggest problem for me is that I don`t record only Open General. From game to game I had to use different settings because of visibility or other factors.

Thanks
One more question (we'll discuss it - in 4-5 hours)
What encoder do you use for recording - hardware or software? What bitrate do you set? What bit rate type - CBR?

------------------------------------------------

Jakiego kodera używasz do nagrywania – sprzętu czy oprogramowania? Jaki bitrate ustawiasz? Jaki typ przepływności – CBR?

:howdy
I watched the videos
My conclusion - Youtube has a policy of demoting sizes when they don't follow their template
The 1600x900 size is undesirable and degrades to 720p
The same thing happens on Google Drive
My 1128x634 video was degraded to 480p (you can watch it this way). After downloading to your computer, it is 1128x634..

Why do you make videos in 1600x900 resolution?

It looks like need to shoot HD(720p), FullHD(1080p) or 2K(1440p) videos

I also calculated the average bitrate for these videos
It is between 5800 - 8000 kbps
The second film stands out - 16617kb/s
I'm not considering the third one
Video four - 1375.1 kb/s --> how did you do it? Are you sure it has 837MB?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Film czwarty - 1375.1 kb/s --> jak to zrobiłeś? Na pewno ma 837MB ?

Let's move on to quality --- Przejdźmy do jakości

I noticed that units ending their movement - after changing the colors informing about it - have these colors more blurred

Image

So I changed the file responsible for this - unitinfo.png
Zmieniłem więc odpowiedzialny za to plik - unitinfo.png

Screen recording - OBS --- Nagrywanie ekranu - OBS

Most often, we record the entire computer screen
You can see our taskbar there
Najczęściej nagrywamy cały ekran komputera
Widać na nim nasz pasek zadań

Image

Wouldn't it be more elegant to hide or cover it?
This can be done by using a black bar that will cover the taskbar

:howdy sympatyk,

for cutting and stuff like this I use Shotcut. It is a free programm with a few disadvantages (eg the program need a fast CPU, because otherwise the programm will crash after a large editing from files).

That youtube will degrade the videos if they are not in the right size is interesting. I think Full HD in future. My screen on my PC 2560 x 1440. I think I will change it to 1920 x 1080.

The 1600 x 900 resolution was just because my PC has this resolution. I think that there was a problem with recording some games via emulator in the past, when I have changed the resolution.

And the most critical problem was that I streamed a lot the last three years and had to do it in a low resolution, because otherwise the video was lagging. Obviously I had forgot to change the resolution after that a lot of times.

But, yes, I will try to make a setting for all future videos. The problem with that salmagundy is that the quality of the Best Ofs suffer from this when different videos or Streams have different resolutions.

The fourth video has 837 MB. I think I recorded it in a higher resolution and then downgraded it, because some people stated, that you can`t see anything if you watch via smartphone.

YouTube recommended resolutions are:
SD 854x480
HD 1280x720
FHD 1920x1080
2K 2560x1440
4K 4096 x 2160

I can't quite reconcile this ..
My screen on my PC 2560 x 1440.
and
The 1600 x 900 resolution was just because my PC has this resolution.
Do you have a 2k screen on which you use 1600x900 resolution? --> because everything was too small?

As you wrote earlier - the choice of resolution is related to the recipient who will watch --> if on a 6-inch screen --> the recording must be visible and of good quality (sharp details)

So the question is what kind of recipients do you have? --> on what screens do they watch .. 6 inches, 14 inches, or large 24 inches, 27 inches, 50 inches?
Maybe you should record twice --> for those with a small screen and for those with a large screen? (in inches)

Please rate - is such a film acceptable on a smartphone (full screen), and on a monitor (in a window) and in full screen?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/106ulpN ... sp=sharing

I tested several options
This one seems to be a compromise (given the capabilities of my computer)
And it has only 132 MB, and 1246.8 kb/s (after processing in the editor) - lasts 14 minutes 51 seconds

--------------------------------------------------

1 206 / 5 000
Zalecane rozdzielczości YouTube to:
SD 854x480
HD 1280x720
FHD 1920x1080
2K 2560x1440
4K 4096 x 2160

Nie mogę tego do końca pogodzić..
Mój ekran na moim PC 2560 x 1440.
i

https://drive.google.com/file/d/106ulpN ... sp=sharing

Ah, so 2k is also okay.

My old monitor from my old PC has this resolution. I still use it when I visit my father. My new monitor has a 2k resolution.

I had a look into my youtube statistics. So PC and handy had quite the same views. But I don`t think it is a good idea to record with high and small quality, because than I had to do this also eg for a Best Of if I will use things of the videos.

Maybe Full HD recording is the best compromise. It still works with normal computer but also should be more visible for the viewers than 2k.

Is the above video such a golden mean?
Is the quality sufficient to watch on a smartphone?(Full HD - full screen)
Icon size acceptable?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/106ulpN ... sp=sharing

------------------
Wielkość ikon do zaakceptowania?

Re: Making videos for OG

How did I record the above video? --- Jak nagrałem powyższy film?

I set the game resolution to 1600x900px (OG - settings)
Ustawiłem rozdzielczość gry na 1600x900px (OG - ustawienia)

Image

I selected 200% zoom (during the game)
Wybrałem powiększenie 200% (podczas gry)

OBS setting --- Ustawienia OBS

Image

I saved the video (OBS) in 1980x1080px resolution
Zapisałem film (OBS) w rozdzielczości 1980x1080px

Image

Result:
So the actual magnification
1080/900 = 1.2
zoom = 200% = 2
total magnification 1.2*2 = 2.4

This means that you see the image on your computer --> just like on an 800x450 screen at 100%

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rezultat:
A więc faktyczne powiększenie
1080/900 =1,2
zoom =200% =2

Further parameters for recording OG game videos
Dalsze parametry nagrywania filmów z gier OG

The most important thing - as they write in the guides - is to determine the best encoder. Depending on the computer and its configuration - we try to choose the H.264 encoder --> we need to determine - if we have the possibility of using a hardware encoder - whether it will work better than the software one
I have 3 H.264 encoders to choose from
- hardware
- AMD graphics card
- NVIDIA graphics card (integrated with the processor)
After some tests, I chose the third option - QuickSync H.264 encoder
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mam do wyboru 3 enkodery H.264
- sprzętowy
- karta graficzna AMD
- karta graficzna NVIDIA (zintegrowana z procesorem)
Po kilku testach wybrałem trzecią opcję - enkoder QuickSync H.264

Image

Now (after some tests) I am setting the encoder
Most guides recommend leaving CBR - VBR works much better for me
I also selected the encoding mode --> TU1: slowest (best quality)
The remaining settings can be seen in the picture
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Teraz (po kilku testach) ustawiam enkoder
Większość poradników zaleca pozostawienie CBR - u mnie zdecydowanie lepiej działa VBR
Wybrałem też tryb kodowania --> TU1: najwolniejszy (najlepsza jakość)
Pozostałe ustawienia widać na obrazku

Image

There is still a tab - Advanced
My choice - color space - sRGB
Color range - full
I raise the white level to 400 nits
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pozostała jeszcze zakładka - Zaawansowane
Mój wybór - przestrzeń barw - sRGB
Zakres barw - pełna
Podnoszę poziom bieli do 400 nitów

It can be assumed that recording a game movie in OBS - according to the parameters shown (resolution 1920x1080) - is around 2GB for an hour

To make the file lighter, you can use a lower bitrate (the quality may be lower)

I use the editor - VSDC Free Video Editor to work with movies
It is mainly used for creating movies
In our case - with its help - we will reduce the weight of the recorded file in OBS without losing quality

Just drag your movie with the mouse to the VSDC window
Select - Export project
Then - choose what type of file you want to get (selected MP4)
Below we choose - what codec we want to encode it with and choose the appropriate profile (selected - high quality)
I personally edit this profile and change the bitrate for the sound to 128 kbps
I also choose - what name I want to save it under
I press - Export project
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ja używam edytora - VSDC Free Video Editor do pracy z filmami
Służy głównie do tworzenia filmów
W naszym przypadku - z jego pomocą - zmniejszymy wagę nagranego pliku w OBS bez utraty jakości

Wystarczy przeciągnąć film myszką do okna VSDC
Wybieramy - Eksportuj projekt
Następnie - wybieramy jaki typ pliku chcemy uzyskać (wybrany MP4)
Poniżej wybieramy - jakim kodekiem chcemy go zakodować i wybieramy odpowiedni profil (wybrany - wysoka jakość)
Osobiście edytuję ten profil i zmieniam przepływność dźwięku na 128 kbps
Wybieram też - pod jaką nazwą chcę go zapisać
Naciskam - Eksportuj projekt

It takes place movie conversion
Depending on the computer, the process may be slower or faster --> conversion parameters and its progress are visible
In the shown case, the movie 1284274 KB will be converted to 400894 KB
If after conversion we find that the quality has decreased --> we can use a profile with better quality ..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can also record movies using applications included by graphics card manufacturers

For example, I have an AMD card
By downloading the latest drivers, we can install an application in which we can record a movie from the OG game
--------------------------
Na przykład mam kartę AMD
Pobierając najnowsze sterowniki, możemy zainstalować aplikację, w której możemy nagrać film z gry OG

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB5Yr45-aTk

It has keyboard shortcuts and is sufficient for our purposes
You just have to remember to select - desktop recording (not the game window)
Otherwise - information windows that appear in the game will not be visible
-----------------------------------

:howdy
You can also describe other programs that are helpful for recording movies, but the topic about movies - does not make movies
So I will show movies recorded from seven scenarios of the H01 GUDERIAN'S GAMBIT campaign Gustlik's e-file
I hope they are good for watching on PC and portable devices (smartphone)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
