Simple submarine display issues in the last version(s)

Post by none »

I'm creating a separate thread, in hope this won't get buried. Yes, it's but a cosmetic issue in a unit type apparently nobody else uses, but still. :(
  • See here for the initial bug report. In short, some time between 2022 and today, old-style, simple submarines started to shadow the hex they're under, and also somehow hide what's behind them (like if they had the "cut LOS" special, which they haven't obviously).
I can't exactly pinpoint since when this started happening since I don't have archives of all the OG executable versions. I know that an old executable I have (file date 17/07/22, in game it says "0.93.5.0") still works as expected (no shadows, no LOS issues). The regression happened after that.
What I assume to be the latest executable (file date 09/01/24, in game it says "0.93.5.RC1.e") submarines shadow the hex they're under, and somehow hide what's behind them (like if they had the "cut LOS" special). :huh

Test scenario, just put it in my old E-File and load it. The coastal city on the left has a radar, and you'll see an arrow-shaped shadow in the middle of the sea. That shadow is created by immobile submarines (sea mines)... You can fly the two recon planes over there to see them (the planes can see submarines, while the radar can't).
If you have an old executable available, try it again with that one and the sea will be all smooth and featureless, as expected, no arrow-shaped shadow...

I have this issue in my to-do list, I've checked that effectively it happens ... but no time enough to check why it happens

Maybe it has something to do with the submarine specific variables (2018) in the efile cfg.

What do you mean?
Anyway, it's clearly a regression since as I said older executables don't display this shadowing, while newer ones do (on the same test scenario linked above). :huh

For example, as far as i know, sub_ex=1 is not widely used and nobody else reported the problem while playing the game. So maybe it could lead into the dirextion of the bug's origin. It was just a thought.

Well, only Luis can say. All I know is that it did work in the past, it's something which was broken after version "17/07/22 - 0.93.5.0". Unfortunately I don't keep all the successive versions, so I can't say at which precise version it stopped working.
Again, only Luis can say what part of the code he did change lately. :dunno

I think I got it fixed, but I cannot test thoroughly ...

Will you test 0.93.5.RC1.f ?
I is available already at my site and will be also available tomorrow at http://www.open-general.com/install/OpenGenRC.zip

As I said in the other thread, will do, I'll be back in 10-20 minutes. Thanks!

---- Edit:

Works perfectly, everything seems back to normal. Thanks a lot! :notworthy
