unofficial EFILE_PG2 1.02R17 (2019-08-13)

EFILE PG2
Image

Version: 1.02R17

This package contains the original 1.02 SSI PG2 efile & campaigns with some technical modernizations. I also added a user-made campaign: 7. Panzerarmee.

Requirements and installation:

You will need a "new format" Open General executable (0.90.60.0 or later) and the latest "new style" OpenIcons.dat (Nov-13-2017 or later) to play with this mod.

Due to legal issues, this package is not part of OpenGen repository, please find it on my site: https://sites.google.com/site/lvjtn9/EFILE_PG2.zip

Installation is simple, just unpack the downloaded zip file into your main OpenGen folder and select EFILE_PG2 after launching the game.

Changes in the SSI files:
  • ALL opendat images (flags, medals, portraits, roundels) are customized, made by me or come from other user-made efiles. There is no SSI graphics at all.
  • Made a new GUI (based on Juankar's default OpenGen skin with rounded corners and even more pure colors).
  • Converted all obsolete file formats to the OpenGen 2013 standards.
  • Replaced empty nations by "(empty)" string in "nations.txt" when converted "gui97.txt".
  • Created a valid "names.txt".
  • Added the version info to "equip.txt".
  • Added custom terrain tiles/layers for tiled maps.
  • Replaced all icons to Default / Pat / Guille / Juankar styles.
  • The snow (for winter scenarios), desert (for scenarios in Africa) iconset are available for all ground classes of several nations, and iconsets are defined in scenarios. Jungle iconset is not used at all.
  • Renamed Infantry units to national denominatios (thanks to Adler and Juankar for collecting them in their efiles), common transports to real ones and fixed a few mistakes (e.g. HUN RCN "Tatra" -> "39M Csaba", SF ATP "Ju-52" -> "Fokker F.VII", DE TK "King Tiger" -> "Tiger II", DE FTR "Me-109e" -> "Bf 109 E").
  • Fixed movement methods of 4-5 units (e.g. Bren universal carrier had halftrack instead of tracked while M3 had tracked instead of halftrack).
  • Fixed the nation of the annoying Finnish bunker at Dunkirk.
  • Added "k" (carrier deploy) attribute to all FTR / TB for compatibility reasons with original 1.02 PG2 exe.
  • Removed unnecessary drop / clear mines, blow/build/repair, train tp attributes.
  • Reworked the flow of the German Blitzkrieg campaign in order to allow BV at Dunkirk and Klin. The new choice scenarios are available only after a BV at Dunkirk or Klin, the V, TV and L lead to where it did before.
  • Deleted 11 standalone and/or multiplayer scenarios. This package is made for feeding nostalgia, for the veteran players to replay the original campaigns time to time, or for newbies to discover the roots of the PG2 mania.
  • Added 6 new "captured" units to the German roster with proper painting and "Can't Buy + No Proto" abilities. They appear in the fixed 7. Panzerarmee campaign.
  • The stats, prices and scenarios ARE THE SAME. I didn't fix, modify, change anything. This is still the very original efile with a bit of spit and polish.
  • Fixed "Pursuit to Tobruk" scenario: there was a 3 inch British artillery out of the map boundaries (33,9), now it is behind Arcoma (30,12).
  • Fixed "Drive to the Sea" (Caen) scenario: there was a British infantry deployed at ocean without embarked on NTP.
Changes in the user-made contents:
  • Latitude of the scenarios are fixed in 7. Panzerarmee campaign, no more snowy and rainy turns in Africa.
  • Fixed the terrain types of the winter scenarios (like Moscow, Kalach)
  • The flag and ownership of the captured equipments are also corrected in 7. Panzerarmee campaign.
Please report any occurent mistakes, glitches or comments via mail or on JP's forums.

(written in nov-2017):

updated this package for supporting the latest improvement of the tiled maps:

- river connections
- fake oceans

now the adjacent rivers can be: a) rivers around an island, b) parallel rivers without connections c) wide rivers looking like ocean (but acting as river). to enjoy this new feature you have to upgrade opengen up to 0.90.60.0 or higher

of course, these new settings have zero affects when you play with real maps, but those players who prefer to use tiled maps all the time will see the difference:

1. guadalajara (aka "madrid") before:

Image

2. guadalajara (aka "madrid") with parallel rivers:

3. lillehammer with fake oceans

updated the gallantry of the 7th panzerarmee campaign. see the new readme:

Code: Select all

                                 THE GALLANTRY OF 7. PANZERARMEE
                                 *******************************

                                        August 12, 2019

The original campaign was barely playable with the new Open General AI, so I have updated it; however, I made only a few changes:

- removed the "loser path" (so the campaign becomes strictly linear), and increased the in-scenario prestige for V and TV instead. IMO it is a better way to help the less successful players;
- reworked the prestige cap: now human players can build a strong army playing at 100% and they still have 500-1000pp per scenarios to burn if they need it;
- reworked the "Normandy" scenario because the OpenGen AI was very passive when playing the original scenario made for PG2.

All the other 20 scenarios are untouched.

Changes in "Normandy" (19th) scenario:
--------------------------------------

- gave AI a few range-2 tanks, ARTY and SPAD guns, and more recon cars by replacing destroyers and some INF;
- all AI units are overstrenghtened up to 12 or 13 SP;
- made the south-western airfield (owned by the AI) a VH should be controlled by both sides, and gave the defenders entrench=10 (so they actually try to defend it);
- made the north-eastern airfield (owned by the human player) a SH, but it is blocked till GT-14;
- removed all auxilliary units except the bunkers and gave the human player 6 deploy hexes.

With these changes the scenario is more dinamic again, AI tries to take the German VH and it also tries to prevent losing its own VH (the French airfield in the SW).

Hopefully with these changes the updated campaign is as much fun to play with OpenGen as it was the original campaign made by Dave Anderson with Panzer General II.

So, youtube offered me a few Panzer Geneneral 2 playthroughs (some of them several years old, but nvm), and this reignited my love for this game. Being an old fart, I just wanted to play the orginal version of Blitzkrieg with the low-cost efile PG2, but in a new and improved engine that is OG. And I had a lot of fun!

I wanted to try a no-planes run, but in the end I bought a few of them, as USSR scenarios were pretty painful without Luftwaffe, and keeping just a token airforce meant that I didn't need to invest that much into purchases and upgrades. They also held very well against the UK+US planes, much better than I expected.
I lost a few units (two tanks, one INF, and then something, maybe one ATY and one RCN), but this was mostly a painless walk. Otoh, I played at 100% pp reward, and I didn't rush the scenarios (note the results), so it wasn't the most courageous attempt ever.

I can see myself trying this again, the old lady still has her charm, and the cheap units make for a cool experience, although a bit fantastic. :tiger

And... another one bites the dust! :-D

This time I gave more thoughts to the core development, and I also didn't forget about the insane prestige rewards throughout the campaign. I had quite a few BVs with quite a few protos. Except for the 2nd Tobruk scenario I didn't need to restart anything (this battle was a real punishment the first try, I lost two tanks, three airplanes, and an infantry, so I got back to the HQ), and I only ever loaded last turn like two or three times when I lost a leadered tank, and a 15 cm aty.
This was pretty enjoyable, and I'm thinking about designing some silly campaign with similar settings. PG2 efile is unfortunately kinda outdated, and I'm not sure if e.g. Waffenkammer would be better (in a "mid-cost efile" sense), but no matter what, I'm gonna get back to designing some time soon.

Tanks are broken in this efile, the low cost leads to a Big Cats Pavilion core. ATY is also quite op, attack stats are out of this world; at least the ammo count sucks. I wanted to have four SPATY against IS tanks, but they were never really needed.

Nice and enjoyable campaign, as usual, the only thing missing was the classic "tu tudududu túdu túdu, tu tudududu túdu túdu, tu tudududu túdu túdu, tú-dudú" tune.
