Name the Pub - poll
We are looking for a new name for our shiny new pub. Deadline is November 22. Every member can vote for two names and after we met the deadline, the candidate with the most votes will win (so we use the "first past the post" voting system). You can change your votes anytime until the poll will be closed.

Re: Name the Pub - poll
i know, it's too late
i was just thinking about a better voting system for poll. it definitely will not be applied to this vote, but imo it sounds interesting enough to apply later: similar to the tv competition shows (like x factor, america's got talent, etc.), the candidates getting the least votes shold be deleted, and people voting for them can give their votes for other candidates
actually, even with the current voting system, when the poll will be close to end, it may be worth to rethink your votes going to an unpopular candidate and switching to one of the possible winners what you hate less

Re: Name the Pub - poll
I voted only once and will keep my second vote for later. Maybe a tie breaker will be needed I also won't vote for my own suggestion because there are many better ones
The voting system what you suggest Csaba, sounds like a elimination race to me. In track cycling events there are elimination races. Every 5th lap or so, the last rider (of the bunch) crossing the line will be eliminated. If something like this can be set up to automatically eliminate the suggestion with the least votes every X days, yeah maybe it will be nice to have. The other option is that someone has to manually delete the most unpopular candidate every time, every X days...

Re: Name the Pub - poll
checked the phpbb documentation and unfortunately it's not possible. if a poll is edited (added/removed options), all votes will be reset to zero
so it's up to the users changing their votes in the final round if they want, or a new poll can be raised between the leading candidates if the result wouldn't be conclusive

And what if one or more of the options are renamed? If votes are not reset, you could rename proposals that did not make it to the next round to something like "X", "Rejected proposal", "Dropped proposal" ...lvjtn wrote: ↑2019-11-04 00:37, Mondaychecked the phpbb documentation and unfortunately it's not possible. if a poll is edited (added/removed options), all votes will be reset to zero

Re: Name the Pub - poll
we are entering the last week to vote and the race is still opened
(btw. there are suspicious new registrations who aren't spammers but also not regular users communicating on the forum. i hope nobody thought it would be possible to cheat: newly registered users can't vote)
if there would be a tie on 21st (one day before this poll expires), is it acceptable to keep open the poll for another week, e.g. or should i create a new poll with the two leading candidates?

Yes, it is very suspicious. (I'd kick everyone out automatically who did not post after a month (No suggestion, just my private opinion).)lvjtn wrote: (btw. there are suspicious new registrations who aren't spammers but also not regular users communicating on the forum. i hope nobody thought it would be possible to cheat: newly registered users can't vote)
I mean, you have to actively register on the forum and then you do not post? I really don't get it. In german we have a word for those dead members: Karteileiche. A pitty, there is no english translation. Something like "Dead card index member"
I'd say you should try and open the poll for one more week.lvjtn wrote:if there would be a tie on 21st (one day before this poll expires), is it acceptable to keep open the poll for another week, e.g. or should i create a new poll with the two leading candidates?
EDIT: Now we have 3 suggestions leading the race with 5 votes each. There is a lot of movement since yesterday. Someone should comment the poll as if it would be a horse race

Re: Name the Pub - poll
Imho, if there are 2 ## of votes on top, then no matter how many candidates there are, a new poll for them should be arranged.
Example, candidate
X has 4
Y has 4
Z has 3
M has 1
N has 2
O has 5
votes, then candidates X, Y and O go to the tie. Same if
X has 4
Y has 5
O has 5
votes.
Re: Name the Pub - poll
Just to clarify your proposal... Your two examples seem to indicate that the envisaged new poll should allow all candidates who garnered the most number of votes and all "first runner-up" candidates (in terms of votes cast) to participate. Am I reading you right ?

Re: Name the Pub - poll
you interpret Chris' words corretly, but he is wrong. rules announced in the 1st post are clear: if there is a single candidate getting more votes than any of the other candidates, it will be the winner, no matter it gets only 10%-20% of the total votesHexCode wrote: ↑2019-11-15 16:44, FridayJust to clarify your proposal... the question was what to do if there were a tie for the 1st place: 2 or more candidates getting the most votes. then a) voting procedure can be expanded or b) new vote can be announced for the leading candidates
just to be clear, if we expand the poll, all non-leading candidates will be eliminated somehow (e.g. added a string "ELIMINATED: " before the name of the candidate, as we discussed with Jurgen), and if we arranged a new poll, only the candidates sharing the 1st place would participate in it
i simply forgot to think about a tie that's why this question is unanswered yet
Re: Name the Pub - poll
How about taking a page from Anglo-Saxon common law principles ? Namely, the courts refuse to hear hypothetical cases. Practically speaking, should a tie were to actually materialize, well, that would be the time for further public deliberations re: some latter day tie breaker procedure.

Re: Name the Pub - poll
hopefully it's not a court, and this is not a case imo even the anglo-saxon countries have electorial laws and these laws are prepared for all possible outcomes (e.g. what happens if a candidate dies, is arrested, a ballot box is lost, or suspicious, uncertificated ballots are found, etc.), and the laws aren't fabricated when the unexpected becomes realHexCode wrote: ↑2019-11-15 18:19, Friday How about taking a page from Anglo-Saxon common law principles ? but what's more important is the technical part: when a poll expires on a phpbb forum, it can't be renewed, only a new poll can arranged, so we should figure out the rule before the poll expires just in case we decide the renewal would be better than a new poll
Re: Name the Pub - poll
This is hardly the place to compare common law to civil law.
A brand new poll in which the available choices would be restricted to just the ones that were tied at the very top appears to be a "clean / fresh" option. As for the possibility of a second tie down the road, well...

Imho, in case of a tie, start a new poll with just the tieing candidates. The old vote could be interesting for statistical and chronological purposes (if 1,2,9 years later someone wants to know how the election concluded), while a new vote should be technically easier to create.

Re: Name the Pub - poll
Of course, the best result would be a tie, no? More polls, more fun, no?
Re: Name the Pub - poll
Depends on the tied candidates. That's where strategic voting comes into play big time... For example:

some guys named their campaign a "long journey", imo naming the pub is the longest journey, do you really want to make it longer?
@ HexCode: yeah, our voting system is much better and more honest than most elections all over the world

Re: Name the Pub - poll
wow neck and neck what a race
i was dreaming of a sign for the pub if i was fortunate enough to win and
if some one so kind who could draw would help
what i had in mind was 2 people in a kubel wagon but one sorta faded out looking at an oasis in the distance
with the main wording WHOOPYS WATERING HOLE at the top
But with one character (the faded out one)saying is that an oasis Whoopy?
The other character replying no JP that`s the praetorian oasis
at the bottom of the banner
WHERE THE OLD GUARD WELCOMES THE NEW
what do you think??

I like it. Not sure how big the banner is, but could have a Danish sergeant guarding the oasis, a programming guy running a guest house there, a chef baking a meal, another one baking a mine cake, a mad hatter etc.Keighleyred wrote: ↑2019-11-20 19:14, Wednesday wow neck and neck what a race

the banner is 202x52px, so i doubt a whole cartoon or a stripping female woman of the opposite sex can be placed on it
but what if to write this story somewhere in the pub? (generic) you can add as many details as (generic) you want / remember

and it's till a tie
and it's till a tie
imo it's time for the tactical voting: let's leave the candidates having 1-4 votes and let's choose one of the two leading candidates (and, please don't vote for both of them )

Hi
Kindly explain (especially the "welcoming" part)
in years gone by there was another forum The Praetorian Oasis that ran side by side with JP`s
here you also got campaigns efiles etc
most of its members moved to jp`s which has now evolved to open general forum
the old guard welcomes the new guard is a pun on the name praetorian like old members welcoming the new members with new ideas

how i see it, PO did not evolve into JP, they existed parallelly. some people (including almighty Lasse, important name of the time if I didn't misspell) never really had interest in bigger community (for example) while some not so much into smaller ones. I was personally never part of PO.... having said that to me this OG forum is more like PO version 2 : ) But open to all of course and without forcing style (maybe just like Luis' game). Don't have interest in technical things that much - of course it is most important part - and we will all see how it evolves. Csaba & Luis are the most concerned and relevant to goals and expectations, they asked for help and I can only participate now )

the race was very tight, the leading candidates gained and lost votes during the last days, till the very last minutes (i know, because i made the another logo 45mins before, when the result was reversed )

it's a very-very bad and bold joke. and it means when you enter a dark, smokey pub standing in the worst quarter of the most terrifiyng port, and only stone-hearted veteran pg2/og players drink their grogs around the tables, some of them having only one eye / leg / arm, and they play with their knives, and then somebody dares to say a single word: "leaders..." and suddenly the worst fight you can imagine begins, very few will come out of the bar alive...
and the story behind the story: we had endless but heated debates on jp's forums about the leaders, till Luis used his commanding power and made this word a taboo. what i openly mentioned now, so probably these were my last words

not important (and not sure really) but as i remember you are maybe "the oldest" in PG2 community still here (Luis was probably there AND he was working, not talking)... at least I gave Jan (without intention by quoting Dante) real Viking funeral all jokes aside, time is the most unbeatable force.
congrats to giving it name, hope for some action in it from me.
