Hello from JP's Panzers refugee

Post by Jarlaxle »

I only found this site a few minutes ago, when trying to figure out how to play Panzer General on my new laptop. :dunno I was a...semi-regular, I guess (same username), for a few years at JP's.

Sad to see the demise of JP's/. :(

I am way too stupid to do any of that. I'm just trying to figure out how to run Panzer General on my new computer.

Original PG. Had the DOS version on CD, but can't find the disc...and my new laptop has no CD drive. :dunno I'm fine with either version.

I heard you can run on an XP virtual machine - but what for?
Here you have the OG (Open General) installer
http://www.open-general.com/install/Ins ... eneral.exe
Much more campaigns - you can try - there are many more possibilities.
You will have no technical problems ...

So...I can install and run that, and get a PG clone...?

You need to understand that I'm REALLY stupid.

The installer is a zip file
You need to select the unpacking folder - preferably on the C drive: create a folder, e.g. Panzer or OpenGeneral -> and unpack the game installation there
When you start the game, you will have a lot of e-file to choose from.
After selecting one of them - you will see the campaigns related to this e-file.
Honestly, I don't know English and I write through a translator.
I also do not know the properties of e-files contained in this installation ..
However, I know - e-file installations that are posted on the Polish website.
http://opengeneral.pl/files/OG_setup_5.06.exe
This installation contains approximately 100 campaigns
You can change the language to English
Will this page be helpful?

Open General is based off of PG2, not the original PG.

That's what i thought, and that's why i wanted to make it clear. But nevertheless, OpenGen is well worth a shot :yes it's free and easy to install, has a ton of additional content available, but it is significantly different from the original Panzer General so if you're looking for something as close as possible to the original PG(DOS) you might be disappointed.

If that doesn't work for you, you have two options:

1. Panzer General Forever (a.k.a. PGF) - a quasi-emulator of original PG that allows one to run PG/AG scenarios and campaigns on modern PCs, but with certain differences compared to the original (different AI module - not an improvement IMO, some additional game rules etc); you can get it here:

https://panzergeneraldownload.com/panze ... rever.html

(you can visit the PGF subforum on these boards, scroll down towards the bottom of the main page to find it, there you can download additional campaigns and mods)

2. Install some sort of a MS-DOS emulator (DOSBox or some such) which will add the missing capability to run old games on modern operating systems. I personally prefer this: http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/

(it takes a bit of fiddling to import the game under the D-Fend interface, but once that's done you just doubleclick it in the list and go; it will run the original PG(DOS) as-is, you'll get the real artifact rather than a copy / modification / emulation / whatever.

How about running Panzer General from outside your new computer...

It looks like the only way to actually do that is by downloading a new ("Wave") browser I've never heard of. :huh

My record for dismal failure is, as usual, unbelimshed. I downloaded PGF, unzipped the file...and it won't open. It seems my new computer is running in "S mode", and I have no idea how to change that. (I'm probably just too stupid.) I give up, sorry to waste everyone's time. I momentarily forgot how stupid I am.

You can change it.
Your choice.

A company from a country that promotes freedom - limits and controls us - as part of our security.
A long time ago I bought a microsoft office with a lifetime warranty for 3 positions. Everything was done until I changed the system to win 7.
It turned out that I can use it for life, but only with the XP system. :evil
Now I kept my windows system 7 and did not switch to the "free" windows 10

There doesn't seem to be any way to change it without upgrading to windows 11.

Yeah, tried that. It said I needed to upgrade to 11 to leave S mode.

Remember that it has to be your decision.

I am not trying to persuade you - I only indicate the way out - if you want to use programs and applications outside the Microsoft Store and the Microsoft Edge browser.

Each Windows 10 user got a program on his computer (automatically, without consent) from Microsoft, which will check if he can switch to windows 11. This is the obligatory way (windows 10 will be without support after some time - like windows XP, windows 7)
In your case - it is important whether your system is in S mode or not.
It doesn't matter if it's Windows 10 or Windows 11 ...

On the websites of Microsoft
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... Windows_10

"When you upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, the upgrade will attempt to install the same edition in Windows 11 as you have on your Windows 10 device. If you have Windows 10 Home in S mode and your PC meets the minimum hardware specifications for Windows 11, you can upgrade to Windows 11 Home in S mode.

Windows 11 in S mode is only available in the Windows 11 Home edition. If you have the Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions of Windows 10 in S mode, Windows Update will not offer Windows 11 because S mode is not available in those editions of Windows 11. Therefore, if you have the Pro, Enterprise or Education editions of Windows 10 in S mode, you'll need to switch out of S mode to upgrade to Windows 11. "

I don't know what windows 10 you have - -> Home ?, Pro? ...
