CC#45 - Guderian's Gambit (from Darek's PG2 archives)

Guderian's Gambit (by Doug Hone) - played with AK4K v.0,83 efile and PG2 2.20 exe - completed in Mar'2010

1. Gambit

At the beginning some :whine. German infantry department of current AK4K 0.83 is simply ridiculous. I haven't noted that issue playing recently with this version on the Polish side, but now seeing those 28 unit types available for purchasing before the first scenario I lost orientation (mostly very crappy ones, and some with overgrown strange names). I can not even imagine that anyone may buy and use some of them instead of old good known types. This is obviously slots wasting, but looks like with 4000 slots to fill nobody cares.
Another annoying thing is that now 12 of 28 prototypes available after this scenario are from infantry class. If other efiles will go similar way, it may be time to consider excluding infantry class from available prototypes again, as it was in original PG2 exe.

This new AK version has many changes in units stats and pricing as well, so Doug's calculations are a little pointless now. You can not buy recommended units, as provided prestige is not enough. Briefing about buying particular unit type (as recommended) is misleading, as it doesn't exist any more (e.g. Ju-87B-1 for 600 pp vanished, but you can find Ju-87B-2 for 792 pp instead). That occurrence put whole idea about purchasing rules (mainly that part regarding precisely recommended unit types for your core) in doubt, as it is not possible to check and update whole campaign after each efile changes (which come quite frequently). Another possible solution - just keep playing the campaign with efile attached to it avoiding newer versions.

Due to described limitations I must adapt Doug's recommendations to my actual abilities. Purchased 2 motorized infantries with cheapest trucks, Pz IIA tank and recon plane for TB role. Whole 17 pp left in my bank afterward.

In the first attempt I distributed my units wrongly, as forces sent to the east were to weak to capture both objectives behind the Wisla river inside BV limit. I stopped and decided to restart. Normally I didn't do that, but with current prototypes limitations if you miss your chance you must wait several rounds for another one, which is hard to accept. That setting encourage to fighting for BV stubbornly in "Protos ON" scenarios. Of course at later stage "Chance for prototype" percentage will have its impact as well, but in the first battle proto should be granted after BV.

In the second attempt, knowing what will come, I sent all my core units towards two mentioned VHs behind the river, when remaining four VHs were left for auxiliaries. The plan worked perfectly, so I took BV with five turns in spare. Got a small para gun as most wanted proto.

Result: BV (-5T) / Proto: 7,5 LG40

2. Battle of Wizna

I purchased a recon when got some extra cash after capturing Lomza in 6th turn. Afterward I deployed my core (excepting sleeping arty proto) and directed to the east.
The rest of battle was rather annoying for me, as I didn't find good method to keep decent speed here. Having only couple of units I was struggling when tried to force the river and additional obstacles just behind it. The proper order of advanced units (which formed a queue) was important, but I sent tank first unfortunately. The advance was problematic, and when in addition front units went out of ammo I knew it will be hard task to win this battle. Resupplying wasn't possible due to surrounding enemies, as well as simply retreating wasn't easy due to heavy traffic. Maneuvering cost me a lot of time again, so when I finally managed to clear the last enemy VH in the last TV turn, I was lucky avoiding loss.
Anyway, so far I like such small scale battles, when despite rather big amount of turns action goes quickly due to your small core and only few auxiliary units.

3. Bialystok

Before the battle upgraded small proto arty to the biggest available one. It may be used finally. The tank was upgraded to Pz IIIE.

Movement restrictions seems to be typical for this campaign. Almost all rivers are impassable, frequently unused bridges and rough terrain limits tactical choices and force you to go slowly in directions where you are expected to be. Significant is that auxiliary units come usually without fuel, so you can not use them promptly.

According to briefing before the battle I sent both core infantries with the arty to the east, when tank and recon went directly south. After couple of rounds I was afraid that southern group consisting all armored units may be in troubles when assaulting cities, but luckily two groups of auxiliary infantries arrived and joined both of my task forces. Afterward my advance went still slowly, but continuously as planned. BV was out of question here, but I got comfortable regular Victory 3 turns after BV limit. My bomber got leader - unfortunately not very helpful in the battle.

4. Brest

Before the battle purchased additional infantry, as was ordered. I took better type SS this time. For the rest of pp OSed my mighty recon plane.
Flying with my plane in Brest direction I saw a lot of obstacles on that way, so chose a road to the east and crossed a bridge there. After some short engagement with old Ft17 tanks I split my forces on two groups, SS Infanterie with PSW recon and arty directed easternmost VH, when both remaining infantries with tank went o Brest. VH on the east was taken quickly and the second group started to siege Brest, so the things went good and I expected easy BV. Unfortunately after first shots was obvious that Brest won't be a piece of cake, as uncountable amount of units were stacked there. My three units with bomber support tried to clear the VH gradually, when the recon with arty was sent to help there as well. My units were seriously worn after couple of rounds, so I spent some prestige for refitting. When Polish reserve infantry attacked from the south I was afraid that the BV chance may disappear, but finally stack was removed (5 or even more units) and Brest cleared in the last turn for BV.
I've got good infantry proto, so probably used here my whole luck assignment for this CC and shouldn't expect too much in the future.

5. Chelm

Before the battle downgraded Gebirgspioniere to Ebbinghaus (whatever it is). Not enough pp to buy real fighter, so I decided to wait till airfield will be captured.
New Ebbi unit cleared mines before Wlodawa and went quickly through a forest in airfield direction. The rest captured Wlodawa VH and went straight to the south approaching Chelm. The airfield was taken probably in turn 6, so I finally purchased fighter and deployed my planes. The western VH was taken a while later. Unfortunately assault of Chelm was disturbed by sneaky Polish Scout, which surprised and attacked my arty in the forest reducing it by a half. A while later one of Polish infantry made a short walk out of the city and reduced that unlucky arty to 2sp, so I must withdrawn it out of action. Remaining units fought bravely against another stack in Chelm, but finally cleared it and after big AD killing battle was won couple of turns after BV limit. Two new leaders arrived, but one of infantries passed 5th bar w/o leader, so I will sell it probably and start another leader hunt from scratch.

6. Break to Sedan

Before the battle sold 5-bar infantry and purchased new SS Infanterie. Added the second recon as ordered.

It was race type battle, so main aspect was eliminating all road obstacles as quick as possible. Ebbi unit ran like crazy patrolling forests in every possible direction. It cleared an airfield, eliminated several observation posts and roadblocks. The IT tank was efficient against fortifications as well. So, no real problems here excepting time limit, but keeping good pace I managed to take last turn BV.

7. Sedan Bridgehead

Before the battle purchased new 15 sFH37 arty.

This was first real battle, definitely most difficult so far. I sent one recon, tank, arty and 38 Inf from northern pontoon bridge area with a task to make flanking maneuver and capture western objectives. The rest, two infantries with arty and recon, started from southern pontoon bridge area, hoping to take Sedan and advance farther south.

The southern group detached Ebbi to capture an airfield, when the rest captured undefended Sedan VH. The brave Ebbi unit after capturing airfield VH went through a river and directed the VH south of Sedan. Units from Sedan were in troubles assaulting in southern direction due to massive defensive formations there, with plenty of French units and bunkers. A pontoon bridge in Sedan was destroyed quickly, so didn't help at all. Attacking units were weakened soon, and finally the recon was KIA. I purchased another recon then to replace lost unit and sent it to Sedan again. That group made some small advance, but despite some repairs I wasn't able to keep them at decent strength level. SS Inf was reduced to 2 sp and brand new recon killed as previous one. I retreated survivors to Sedan and they rested to the end of battle. Only Ebbi unit was able to approach that VH on the south, but was overwhelmed by French infantry and tanks there. Anyway fought bravely using forests as a support base. After winning the leader it was able to use smart partisan tactic – approach, strike and run – several times, so the VH defenders were weakened that way. When reinforcement infantry unit arrived to the area I managed to take that VH finally.

The northern group in the meantime made big raid, taking several VHs on the way. Started with mid-northern VH, then went to northwestern VH, then directed south taking both airfield and southwestern city VHs there. The last one was another airfield in the middle of the map, which was taken after surprising attack from the west. Unfortunately it was done just one turn after BV limit.

Despite the result and two core units loss I'm quite happy after this battle, as all three infantries and the fighter got new leaders.

8. De Gaulle's Counter-Attack

Before the battle sold expensive arty and purchased cheaper 10,5 leFH18. Added new Pz IVD and small AT gun. Upgraded 38 Infanterie to SS type.

I never saw so many French tanks in a single battle before. Despite big amount of them I was able to hold and kill one by one with several overruns. The recon plane was very helpful observing area all around, so I wasn't surprised and could relocate my tanks properly stopping all French breakthrough attempts.
The main problem was blocked access to the last northwestern VH behind the river, where I was stalemated and spent zillion turns clearing obstacles on the other side of the bridge. When I managed to take the last VH, had only one turn in spare of whole TV limit.

Note: I liked an idea that in some earlier scenario purchased units went with 99 exp. It's better that set it to 100 exp, as you will get the bar just after single shot, and don't loose a chance to get a leader when passing 100. Here units went with 200 exp which is not as good as having them at 199, which could spare one chance to get the leader as well.

9. Amiens

Before the battle purchased additional tank, Pz IID, and upgraded both SS Infanterie to 40 Pioniere.

Added Ebbi, recon and 10,5 arty to north-center aux 3 tanks group. The rest was deployed on German VH perimeter on the east.

The Ebbi unit went quickly across the mountains and forests directing French central VH with an airfield. One tank with recon and arty were sent to support it, but left slightly behind making some detour due to terrain. Remaining two tanks directed westernmost VH, Abbeville.
In the meantime main forces easily captured first VH on the way to Amiens. Two Pioniere cleared the way removing all obstacles, like minefields or entrenchment. Airfield next to Amiens, as well as the city, were captured without problems.
At the same time Ebbi unit took central VH, but two tanks struggled trying to attack the last Abbeville VH. Just after approaching it, couple of reinforcement infantries occurred around attacking my tanks. I sent all planes to help them, but due to long streak of rainy turns they weren't able to do nothing serious. The recon went on the southern side of river, closing to Abbeville from the south. I planned to sent Ebbi there as well, but due to some enemy units which appeared in the central area, it must stay and defend its VH to the end of battle. Luckily after regular attacks during many turns I cleared Abbeville VH of all stacked units two turns before BV limit. I did it without infantry and artillery, so it took more time than could be with better units distribution. Recon got new leader when passed 5th bar.

10. The Channel Ports

Before the battle did nothing at HQ, saving prestige for later.

Deployed all units excepting AT gun, on the west flank, when auxiliary units attacked on the east flank. All objectives were settled around two ports, Bulogne and Calais. Ports' perimeters were filled with plenty of Marine infantry units, all entrenched to 9, with support of some artillery and MGs. Calais in addition was guarded by strong AD element.
Auxiliary units went from the south to the north along eastern border of map. They managed to take airfield VH, but were stopped then before Calais. Regular siege started but advance was extremely slow.
My core after deployment started Bulogne assault. It took plenty of turns as each enemy unit needed some time to lower entrenchment before could be killed. After capturing two VHs in Bulogne my corps directed Calais as well, approaching form southwestern direction. The road was full of obstacles, roadblocks and mines, and then entrenched defenders stopped my advance as well.
I struggled seeing like turn counter is going down and was afraid that BV will be out of question. Luckily in the last moment small breakthrough on the eastern side along the sea was done, so I could sneak there using my Ebbi unit and attack VHs, one by one, with some artillery support. Took last turn BV finally, but the chance for new proto was missed this time.

Result: BV (LT)

11. Advance to Dunkirk

Before the battle did nothing at HQ, saving prestige for later.

Due to limited deployment I used my best tank, recon, both arties and all three infantries. Both planes went into action after an airfield capturing. The small scale battle went easy, as a tactic is very simple here. Cleared the way through all defenders easily. Entrenched enemy unit defending the last VH behind the river was blown out one turn before BV limit, but couldn't take it straight due to lack of fuel, so must wait one turn longer just resting.
I played this scenario recently in my LSSAH camp run, but this time I found it definitely easier.

12. Gambit Barbarossa

Before the battle sold Pz IID and 3,7 Pak. Purchased Pz IVF, StuG IIIB & SPAD. Upgraded two tanks to Pz IIIH & recon plane to Me 110E. OSed some units for the rest of pp.

The second visit in Brest went without big troubles. Despite usual big stack in Brest fortress, I was able to capture both city VHs without delay. Main attack was organized by my core units from the east, after using two pontoon bridges provided. Two auxiliary infantries took position on western perimeter, but didn't attack seriously waiting till defenders will be weakened enough. They took part in final assault.
One nasty KV-2 with Overwatch leader made some havoc among my units, but luckily ran out of ammo quickly and was eliminated afterward by massive attack of my units. The last VH on the east were approached promptly and single entrenched unit which was settled there wasn't the problem at all. Got BV with one turn in spare.
Smaller arty got leader when passing 5th bar. Interesting that new StuG and SPAD didn't shot once.

13. Two Army Encirclement

Before the battle purchased additional Pioniere. OSed some units.

According to briefing all battle groups had their tasks to capture assigned objectives, with bypassing two bigger cities filled with entrenched defenders.
Northwestern group of auxiliaries went to the south capturing VH before the river and an airfield.
Middle western group of auxiliaries flanked the city and after some fighting with many Russian cavalry units captured the objective with a bridge on the river.
Northern group of auxiliaries, which appeared on the battlefield a while later, captured northern VH, and after passing the river managed to take another VH placed farther to the south.
Main forces consisting of my core units went from southwestern deployment zone, directing the middle of the map and taking all objectives on their way. Afterward turned southeast and captured the last VH one turn before BV limit. It was necessary to keep all taken VHs guarded, as several Russian units were walking around and tried to recapture some of them.
Got my third proto, some fighter-bomber unit. Now must take decision: sell my most experienced unit or new proto? I wish I knew that will get it before recon plane upgrading.

14. Race to Smolensk

Before the battle purchased additional Pioniere.

Decided to keep my old bomber in a garage temporarily and check how new FB will perform first.
My units were deployed in two groups on the western border of map. One group chose northern route when the second one went along southern border. Both groups passed Mogilev city, placed directly in the center, unattended due to heavy defensive lines around it. Both northern VHs on the western side of Dnepr river were captured promptly by the northern task force. The southern group approached the southern VH placed on the eastern bank of Dnepr and was stopped there for some time, as area was covered by strong artillery units. Luckily strong reinforcements appeared on the north and the south as well, giving new power for my advance. Bothe groups after passing the Dnepr went farther east, and then turned to the center trying to close a gap. Both task groups met and cleared all objectives one turn before BV limit.
Most annoying unit was Aerial Defense placed in Mogilev, which covered big area around it and greatly limited Luftwaffe efficiency. My new bomber was much better against enemy planes than ground units. Was badly damaged by long range AD and reduced to 2 sp, so must be withdrawn of the battle. The second recon got leader, but one of tanks passed 5th bar remaining leaderless.

15. Smolensk-Drive to Yelnya

Before the battle upgraded 10,5 leFH18 to 15 sFH37.

This was the massive battle due big amount of auxiliary units. I sent my core with assistance of some auxiliary units of 10Pz Div to the north with a task to capture Yelnia. The other group of auxiliaries consisting mainly of Das Reich units was sent to southern VH. Some units defended my VHs on the south against Russian attacks. The plan worked good, and southern VH was captured first. Yelnia was taken one turn before BV limit, but just one turn earlier my initial VH which was left empty was taken by some nasty BT7 tank. I sent one bomber, recon and tank back to it, hoping that they manage to recapture the VH. In the last BV turn I bombed enemy tank, and after my tank attack BT7 retreated, so my recon took objective back saving BV in the last moment.
That Russian units attacking from the rear was completely unexpected, as usually some auxiliary units were provided by Doug to guard captured VHs, but this time reinforcements didn't arrived so I thought situation is under control.

16. Yeremenko's Stab

Before the battle OSed arties. Me110 was left in garage again.

Auxiliaries located in northwestern area captured closest VH after short fight. Afterward strong Russian counterattack started, so defensive position was formed and in that area I did nothing more, just held the position till the end of battle.
My core was deployed in the northeast, around SH and airfield. They directed south along eastern border of map, capturing all VHs in line, including that located behind the river. Afterward the last southern VH remained, so my units turned west and went along the river approaching it. So far everything was fine, but final assault was difficult due to strong defensive position supported by command bunker placed in the VH. My best tank, StuG and 2 Pioniere units were reduced to 1 sp and must retreat out of enemy sight. Luckily I managed to clear VH with desperate attack of my strongest (4 sp at the time) Pioniere, and took last turn BV.
It was hard battle with plenty of enemy units, especially Russian air forces were presented in a big number.

17. Collision at Konotop

Before the battle purchased another tank and OSed some units. Me 110 was left in reserve.

The battle wasn't so hard as I expected. My core units deployed on the NW area went along west flank directing south. They captured two VHs, each of them was placed just behind the rivers. Afterward they were split on two groups, main group approached Konotop from the west, the second group directed farther south with a task to capture two additional VHs there.
In the meantime auxiliary units placed in the middle (Das Reich) and in the NE attacked as well. They forced a river and captured one VH. Afterward Das Reich group directed Konotop, when the other group went along eastern border and captured VH behind the river. Auxiliary recon was sent there just after starting the battle from the western flank, so that units weren't blind and could advance safely. After passing a forest another VH was taken, and then some units were sent to Konotop from the east, when the rest directed southeastern VH.
Konotop, defended by entrenched units and small stack with HQ bunker, was bombed with artillery and everything that could flying, especially very effective auxiliary level bombers. Finally two southernmost VHs and two Konotop VHs were taken in the same turn, with two turns of BV limit in spare.
Three units passed 5th bar without leader. After initial leader's streak now they didn't come eagerly. Anyway, got another bomber proto, which is a little disappointing, as I have two bombers already (when can use only one in a battle) - new tank or arty could be more helpful for sure. It's time to sell something, I think.

18. The Ring of Steel

Before the battle sold Stuka and OSed arties and planes. Me 109F bomber didn't participate in the battle.

What a nasty battle, which made more problems than was expected. After reading a briefing and some AAR I hoped it will be just simple hunt for weak Russian units, but it wasn't, and I got loss in my first try. I captured all VHs promptly, but was surprised when group of Russian units, mainly cavalry, occurred in the eastern region and surprisingly recaptured Romny VH, which was left empty by me. Slightly annoyed, I detached some group of my advancing army and sent it back with a task to capture Romny once again. Anyway, very soon I saw it was not needed at all, when some Russian infantry walked into my initial VH (empty of course) and the battle was over.

In the second attempt, knowing about those nasty surprises, I captured all VHs and secured them properly. Afterward I played rather defensively, allowing enemy units to attack. It was easier allowing them to come than searching for them on the whole map. Spotting wasn't a problem with such approach. Some annoying occurrence were enemy infantries which were teleported in groups from time to time in between my units on the south, but luckily I was able to remove them promptly after arriving. The last Russian unit was killed eight turns before BV limit.

19. Operation Typhoon-Breakthrough at Bryansk

Before the battle purchased an additional 15 sFH37 arty. Upgraded transports for all Pioniere. Me 109F bomber was left in reserve.

When I saw long Russian defensive line formed along the river from the north to the south I was really scared, especially when occurred that they were backed by strong artillery support. Of course that was not enough, so aerial AD were placed as well to cover most of Russian units. German auxiliaries were formed in parallel line on the west side, starting from the north. The line on the southwest were filled with my core units. The massive battle with a lot of struggling was expected.

Soon I noted, that all Russian front line defenders are anchored by entrenchments, so they shouldn't walk on their own. In that situation the tactic was to make breakthroughs by concentrated attacks, allowing to sneak behind the defenders, then bypass and ignore completely the rest of them. I decided to move all auxiliaries from the middle, driving them to the north to reinforce the units attacking there. Some later reinforcements were sent that way as well. My core forces with some auxiliaries attacked in the south.

The southern group made rather fast breakthrough, capturing closest VH and another one slightly to the north. A while later my planes discovered, that both VHs farther to the east are not secured by Russians, so I sent some units to take them as fast as possible.
The northern group went very slow with high casualties, but still made some progress. They captured Bryansk VH first, then the second VH slightly to the south, and finally an airfield and the last Orel VH on the northeast, which was left empty. That was done in the last BV turn. Luckily the back lines were not defended at all (to imitate historical situation), so after initial breakthrough the battle wasn't that difficult like could be. Got finally new leader for my infantry.

20. Operation Typhoon-Battle of Mtsensk

Before the battle sold SPAD. Purchased towed AD and upgraded Me 109 to FW 190. Me 109F bomber didn't participate as usually.

The first part of battle was simple, just going with your core units to the Russian defense line, where auxiliary tanks were useless against entrenched positions. Then several turns were spent before some advance was noted, under enemy artillery fire and air attacks. Finally after making a breakthrough my units went to the easternmost VH. All the time problems with resupplying occurred, due to snow/sand hexes covering the whole map. That issue slowed down my advance seriously. I was hoping for BV anyway, but when the VH defender was blown out in the last BV turn, another one occurred from the stack, so one extra turn was needed. Got regular V (BV+1) and a new leader for the tank.

21. Operation Typhoon-Tula and Beyond

Before the battle sold towed AD, purchased SPAD and another tank, OSed arties. Didn't use Me 109F.

The battle went crazy. At the beginning my core, attacking from the southwestern deployment area to the north, captured two closest VHs on their way. Group of auxiliary units, which started in the middle south, captured VH slightly to the east. Afterward they were attacked by small group of Russian tanks and held their position. Two group of reinforcements attacked three northwestern objectives, small NW city, Tula and an airfield. After hard fighting the city and Tula were taken, but the airfield was still out of range.
Due to snowy weather my air force wasn't very effective, but I used one plane to patrol over two farthest VHs in the north and northeast. They were found empty. I directed my core forces there, diagonally across the map. My Ebbi unit went through forests alone, closing to middle east objective, which was problematic due to my southern auxies engagement around their first VH.
Before my core reached their aim, Russian reinforcements started to come. Both empty VHs were occupied then, but I was still able to capture them promptly. Must defend them straight, as enemy tanks and other units were rolling around the map. NW auxiliaries finally made breakthrough and took the airfield VH, so the only one left in Russian hands. Ebbi was close to it, but was attacked and weakened. I must retreat it back to the forest and refit. Afterward attacked the VH once again, forcing defender to retreat. That allowed my small auxiliary 250 recon to take it. Unfortunately in previous turn the Tula airfield was retaken by Russians, so I must arrange one more attack on it. Managed to do it one turn before BV limit. It was the last moment probably, as my units spread on whole map were mixed with T-34 and KV tanks which searched for prey.

22. Operation Typhoon-Attack of the Siberians

Before the battle sold SPAD and Me 110 bomber. Purchased big AD. Upgraded StuG to 7,5 AT. OSed planes and AT maximally.

The plan was simple, as after reading DB's AAR I knew that there was nothing to do excepting holding as much VHs as possible till retreating will be allowed, which guarantee TV. I saw DB was very excited with his AD performance, so I did the same and purchased one. Expecting Russian tanks hordes I replaced StuG with real AT gun of range 2.
From the first sight it was obvious, that deployment in the far hexes on the front line may be suicide, so I ignored them, leaving all auxiliaries on their own. All my units were deployed in SW quarter of map, where two lines of defense were established on two VHs perimeters. First one was set from the west to the east (till central forest), and the second one from the south to the north (till the same forest as well). The forest area was patrolled by my Ebbi unit. That way all three VH in the SW area were secured.
Russians attacked furiously from the beginning, clearing all far VHs and killing all auxiliaries there. My defense lines were reached by first enemy tanks in 7th turn. Afterward Russian assault started. Numerous enemy planes were not real danger and big AD gun shot only twice, due to good work done previously by my three fighters. Much more busy was new AT, which was very effective in tanks softening. Anyway, position was held successfully to the 13th turn, when the order to retreat was received. Followed it at once and got obligatory TV, as my two best tanks with leaders were weakened to 1-2 sp then. My newest arty got leader.

23. Operation Typhoon-Called Off

Before the battle OSed all tanks maximally.

Nice and short ending scenario. Defensive setup of my units formed around initial VH was good enough to withstand all enemy offensive attempts. With good artillery coverage and big AD to discourage Russian planes it was practically untouchable.

Knowing about expected partisans activity in SW area I left my planes there next to an airfield. When partisans occurred I attacked them with my planes, unfortunately both enemy units were smashed by each plane with single attack. That situation caused a problem, as hidden VHs were not discovered and my Pioniere sent to the area couldn't retake them to finish the battle.
I restarted the battle once again with the same plan, but waited this time till partisans find their VHs. Afterward they were easily killed by my planes again and Pioniere took one VH in turn 4 (BV limit) and the second one in turn 5, scoring regular V. I don't suppose it may be done faster due to distance to travel on snowy ground.

Result: V (T#5)

Re: CC#45 - Guderian's Gambit (from Darek's PG2 archives)

Post by panzerdarek »

Results summary: BV-15 / V-5 / TV-3

Some final remarks that I have gathered after completing Doug's campaign (in addition to those I made directly when playing).

Pros:
Good and precise design – no bugs or inaccuracies noted.
Accurate cap settings – no problems with staying under it at 100, even after having four protos and selling one of them.
In scenario prestige provided (turn or hex), which is critical for properly designed campaigns, allowing to choose difficulty level by pp setting before campaign starting.
Used new possibilities given by 2.2 exe (as lowered base unit strength or experienced units purchasable).
Good briefings with hints and debriefings with historical background.
Not overdone with obstacles, fortifications and stacks. Not over-experienced and over-strengthen units.
Fairly set limits for BV – got many of them in the last turn. Perhaps could be set more challenging in some scenarios instead of limiting protos?

Cons:
Short time frame – decreased fun of your army developing due to limited amount of available units (for purchase and as prototypes).
Purchase rules/recommendations – they are pointless in my opinion, if not connected with attempt to build strictly historical army (which is not the case here). I think that players which try custom made campaigns don't need such help, as they know how to build properly balanced core after playing stock SSI campaigns for sure. Artificial rules limit campaign replayability factor greatly.
Starting experience for purchased units set on 200 in many scenarios. I prefer to have it slightly lower, e.g 190, which don't make big difference for player and save one extra chance to get a leader.
Limited chance for prototypes – only possible in 7 scenarios. I'm against such solution in general as it decreases fun of play significantly. See note of 16. Feb.

Something to consider:
If recommended core will be still used, try to avoid particular units picking, just remain with units class. That eliminate issues caused by efile changes.
Anchored units. Good thing is that they keep designated positions. Bad thing is that they don't participate in the battle actively and are easy to pass even in one hex distance, being spectators only.

In general it is very well made campaign even at current design stage, but I believe it may be still better after some final polishing. Comparing to its old WK version (12 battles long) this is definitely quite new level of quality and complexity. I'm glad I played it – many thanks for Doug.

Re: CC#45 - Guderian's Gambit (from Darek's PG2 archives)

Post by panzerdarek »

I have to add extra note related to todays status of the campaign, which most likely is different comparing to version used when CC45 was released. Many of things pointed in my old AARs may be pointless now after later updates of the campaign.
For example, I have completed recently Guderian's Gambit playing it with OG and Basekorps efile, and it was widely updated for sure. From other side, I noted other issues caused by the conversion to another equipment, which was done without care on some details. That had an impact on some scenarios. To point one thing: Doug provided sometimes an auxiliary unit with a task to built dirt airfield, when after conversion to another efile that unit was not able to do that (lacking 'Z' ability). Obviously that is not designer's fault, but rather the person responsible for careless conversion, most likely done automatically. :dunno
